I have a niece who is married to a man twice her age. He owns a Mercedes / BMW auto dealership and is a millionaire. Owns two very large homes one in Illinois another in Scottsdale, AZ. No children She dresses very well. She writes a FaceBook story about a man in front of her on line in Costco who paid for her entire order! Merry Christmas ! No string attached. She is awed by the generosity of this guy for Christmas. My question is this: how or should I even reply ? Obviously this generous man helped out a rich woman! Why didn't he look for someone struggling with kids and inexpensive clothing? In fact, I think he must of been an azzhole

Why respond at all? Why not just accept the fact that the man felt the need to be nice and generous to human kind? Giving doesn't always have to be to the needy in order for it to mean something. If it made him feel good, that is all that matters.

How much nicer if it were a lady with a few kids and looking like she could use some help. Not a lady with coach pocket book and designer clothes.

Do not take this wrong, the man might have other plans or motives. If all he wanted to do is help someone then put it in the kettle or send it to a shelter where people have nothing. Sometimes I question how to help people that are homeless or in need as they might be in a situation that they have at times no control. Other times that is not the case. He most likely men't well, and that is a good thing.

Sounds like she did alright, no reply needed. I guess she could pay it along and donate the money she would have spent at the store to a charity or family in need, but that would be her choice.
The guy likely was just in the Christmas spirit, but due to the news we get every day some see only possible ulterior motives. Sadly, I felt that at first thought too.

This goes on all over it's call pay it forward,
people do it in drive throughs, pay for the car behind them
the goal is to get people to do it also for someone else.

If she took the generosity and went home without
paying it forward to someone else then I'd say she's clueless
to the pay it forward program.

Inform her of the reasoning and she needs to go
pay it forward, it's for Karma, do something good
for someone and you will receive a reward.

I'm curious how he did it because they would have to
scan her purchases with the costco card and then he has
to scan his CC at the register...

Well some of her girl friends said they hoped her cart was full! A couple said what you said. And a few said she deserved it! I understand paying it forward but I believe in helping the needy. Sure it's was his money his choice but my opinion is the needy need it more. Will she pay forward? Knowing her I doubt that. I hope she does.

Then there are some who only think of themselves and don't care about anyone else.

Interesting thread. Well, it is the season of giving. I like to drop a few dollars in the Salvation Army kettles every Christmas. They helped me out one time many years ago and gave me a job tending the coal furnace. I slept during the day on a cot near the furnace and shoveled coal at night to keep the building heated. I stayed there most of that winter of 1960/61. I was 18 and homeless.
