Hey can someone give me any ideas, I was recently cruising down the road on my 96 FXDL, and it was running great. The front plug wire came off, my fault I recently added some chrome head bolt & plug covers and did not shorten the wire boot. I cut the boot shorter and took off but now the bike is not running right, a lot of hesitation and popping ect. while taking off and slowing down.

if you don't get the covers properly seated around the plugs the chrome cover
will arc the charge from the plug to the head outside the head and it will run like
    you described.

They also have rubber insulation between the cover and the plug, if it tears or cracks
the same thing will happen, I had them on the heritage, it would run good, then hesitation popping etc.

Take off the plug covers, put the plug wires back on, make sure you get the click when the end of the wire goes over the end of the plug. Bet the problem goes away

    Mine went in the trash...

I agree with what Hotroadking said, that sounds most likely to be the problem.

Hey thanks, will definetly give it a try. Didn't even think about that being the problem since it was running so well before the plug wire popped off while I was cruising, thought maybe this could have screwed up something. Thanks again.

trashed the covers and replaced the plugs but no luck, still running rough, any other DYI suggestions I can try? Will probably bring it to my mechanic Monday but was sure looking forward to riding this weekend, just don't like to when itsnot running right, don't want to screw something up worse.

if it backfired when the plug wire came off, it may have loosened the seal between the carb and manifold, or even at the head.....check for vacuum leaks

update, turned out the accelarater pump on my carb was the problem, recently had the carb rebuilt and jets up sized, my mechanic said he used a aftermarket kit on it and the diaphram rubber was too hard. Running good again, I guess it was just coincidence it happened when the plug wire came off. My mechanic coundn't explain that one, didn't charge me anything since he had just did the carb couple of weeks ago, he's a good honest mechanic which unfortunatley aren't as common as they use to be.

My indy is an honest guy as well. he will cut through the bullshiit and and tell me what needs to be done. He has the best reputation around here I think. Glad to hear that you got it up and on the road.

Her I go bragging on my indy, took a ride yesterday and its still not running right. Made sure I ran over 30 miles so it would be up to temp and it still wants to what I call stutter between 1100 to 2200 rpm. If I pump the throttle a few times before taking off it doesn't seem to do it, I think its starving for gas. aybody agree with that, or think it may be something else? Will pu it back in the sop Tuesday if I can't maybe get it straightened out myself.

That is just crazy. I read that you changed the accelerator pump and the diaphragm as well? What about the VOES, could this be an issue do you think?

heard from my Indy today, he been pulling his hair out but finally found the plug wires bad, don't know if cutting the boots shorter when I had the chrome covers on F***d them up or what, but he said they intermittently go to ground. He put on another set he had and it ran perfect. He also found while test driving it the front motor mount bad, told him to change it. Got a short trip to Miss. coming up and don't want no problems.

would like to insert a pic of my bike but am too computer dum to figure out how.

To insert a picture from a PC

You will have to compress the picture down to a KB size. If you have picture manager this is easy to do. Once you have downsized and saved the edit, save it to your desired folder. Close windows.

On the forum if you scroll down you will see an icon that says "Manage Attachments" Click that and a window will open in upper left corner. In this window you will see 8 choose file icons. this means that you are allowed to attach 8 files to a single post. Click "choose file, then select the file that you wish to attach. Once you will have selected the file that you want to attach go back to that window and you will see an icon that says "upload" Click that and it will load the attachment. Remember that if your file is too big it will not load. Once it has attached you are now free to either upload another file or submit your post. I hope this helps. PM if you have any questions and leave a phone number if you wish and I will give you a jingle.

My Indy called and said the bikes ready to pick up. New plug wires and front motor mount, told me to bring my helmet(louisiana) to test drive before loading it up on the trailer. Didn't tell him the helmet been in the truck since I dropped it off. By the way $225 for the work done including motor mount and plug wires, sounded reasonable to me but open for other opinions on the cost.:D
