thanks. Changed out the plugs today, went with harley plugs, made a little difference. noticed when I removed the old plugs the back plug gap was maybe .020 and the .040, so I set the gap on the new back plug at .020 and now runs alot better, like before i changed them the first time. whats up with that ? any ideas

Should fire at .40 gap unless you have a weak spark. Wires, coil, timming

.020 is a very small gap. Something else is wrong if that made it better. Check wires, coil, etc. And yes, Harleys do make more noise - part of the charm.

well the question was what i do wrong ! if this is your first harley . and your first bike the purchase was wrong . lol . just bustin your chops . split the diffrence in the gap 0.37 should be fine sportster are noisy little bastard your turning four cams all gear driven . they make a racket no biggie . start it up no choke give the throttle 2 turns fire it up hold the throttle at a grand and warm it up . then take it for a ride see how it runs . some motors are a little cold natured and take a little to run smooth . then to finish your tune reset the carb up . follow the directions that they have in the help section , you would be surprised how many carbs are set up wrong and when done correct the bike will perform awesome . congrats on the sporty and enjoy.
