Hey guys, I have been searching for a while now for info on the so-called problem of the gear drives wearing out & damaging new cables. 1998 FLHT with the cable going to the front wheel. I just got this bike & got a new cable with it. The old one was broken at the bottom, I did a little research & found if you put a new cable on & the drive is still bad it will brake the new cable.
So, before I tackle this, does anyone have any info that could be helpful? No I dont have a manual (yet) but thought I'd throw this out there & see what experiences ppl have had.
    Thank you

the cable...aka chain....needs lubricated. use a water proof grease, such as used in boat trailers. take the drive off the front wheel and clean it and lube it also. be sure the speedo head is not binding. you can do this with a drill and the old chain......have fun!!!

Just got it all done today. Everything seems to work great. (well, like its supposed to :S )
I pulled the front wheel off enough to get the drive off, sprayed it with brake cleaner & oil back & forth to get all the rusty crap out of it. Finally got it clean enough & lubed it, putting it back together after testing it with the cable in.
Pulled the fairing front off & installed the new speedo cable, fastened it up & took it for a spin. The bike will only do about 140kms/hr so thats as high as it read. ;)
Put about 13kms on it so not a big ride.....roads still quite sandy & tons of supper hour traffic. :D
