I have an '05 FXDL that's all stock. I've ordered a Arlen Ness Big Sucker Stage 1 filter and Vance & Hines slip-on Straightshots HS mufflers. I didn't know if I could get by with the basic kit or I should get the complete/deluxe kit?

For the Money; go with the complete kit. If your carbed almost any of the kits will be a big improvement.
Don't drill the slide - get rid of the plastic elbow on the fuel inlet and go to a high flow brass one.
And read all the posts on installing BEFORE you start; it might just save you some headaches and money.

this is the kit i used. Stage 1 Carb Tuner Kit

i feel it is the best on the market. i have used the others and they fall short...always having to mess with them. this kit is a "set it and forget it" kit....just my 2 cents..........

that is going to depend if you want to mess with the carb alot, or do it once and forget it. the instructions are pretty straight forward on the kit i mentioned. i went through a lot of jets, and agony trying to get it right. got the kit, no more problems......you can buy different jets from the dealer and play with it.....your bike may be a bit different from your buddys. some like the same stuff, others want it different. go figure.............have fun!!!!!!!!

I've got a deluxe kit and hi-flow brass elbow on order. Put my new pipes on last night and will wait for the jet kit before I put on the Big Sucker. Wish me luck.

Your gonna love that Big sucker - I put one on mine and surprize no more oil leak in the bottom of the cover.
One thing - make sure you torque that puppy using the instructions - to loose or to tight and ya get broken ears or leaks.
I put the notations in pencil in my manual next to the stock pictures under air filter section to help me remember - that way I don't have to worry if I misplace the orignal paper work.

I installed the the jet kit & big sucker a few days back. Wasted my money on the brass elbow, it already had one. Guess I should have looked before ordering. It's been raining every day but finally let up enough to ride her a few minutes last night & 25 miles into work this morning. Seems to run pretty good. No backfiring or coughing noticed, little to no popping on decel. I'm not sure if I have the mixture adjusted right or not? I turned it in until it stumbled quite a bit then out until smooth as it would get, which didn't seem as smooth as prior to all the mods, but maybe it just seemed that way because the new pipes. Is there anything that will let me know for sure if I have it right. It seems to lope more at idle than before but I'm not 100% sure on that.

The pipes will make your bike idle differently, thats common. The sweet spot for the mixture screw is normally between 1/4 to 1/2 turn out from where it first stumbles. Too far and the mixture becomes fat (overly rich). If you have it adjusted just beyond the point of coughing off-idle you should be fine.

If you bought the brass elbow from me send me an email and I'll let you return it for a refund. No sense in holding onto it if you already had one installed.

It's no secret that Harleys use the same carb as the Kawasaki KLR650! KLR guys referred me over to this site, so my question is, what main jet is supplied with the stage 1 kit as I was needing a 145mj.

Also wondering if the needle included has an adjustable clip for height?

As for the CVP Velocity Emulsion Tube, that is something new never talked about on the KLR forums. Is it worth it?

On another note, KLR sites keep telling us to drill the slide for faster, smoother throttle response, but then I read that this kit has a better spring so no need to drill the slide! I guess I better buy a Harley soon now too :)

"It's no secret that Harleys use the same carb as the Kawasaki KLR650..." Partially true. Both have identical inner parts and share a similar body, but there are difference such as the mounting. Also since the Harley only uses a single carburetor the jet sizes are much larger. The main jets are typically only as small as 160 or 165 though the smallest I stock is 170. If you go to J&P and search on harley main jets they have a 150 (402-740). The other parts I have such as the emulsion tube and spring will all fit that carb.

Thanks Ken! I like the idea of not drilling the slide and will use your spring and emulsion tube...never heard of an emulsion tube, but I think I get the idea that it sprays a finer mist etc, so it sounds like a good idea. I just ordered online from you, but I guess I can't add this stuff now that I ordered or can I add it to the same order?
