I have a 2000 Sporty 883. I need to buy a new front and rear tire. There are just so many out there. Can anybody recommend one? I was looking at the Avon Venom's. I want good tires just not expensive as hell either.
    Thanks for any info.

theres a lot of good tires out there, avon is one of them , I run the metlzers hold the road in wet or dry & i get real good milage out of them , some like the dunlops what ever tire you choise just check the pressure all the time & they will last longer & burnout will cause loss of milage but look cool

I would say the Avons are the stickiest, you may not get quite the mileage of a dunlop but they will feel better riding, I have heard the german metzelers are good but the Brazilian ones are crap, The Dunlop E3 are supposedly a very good tire sticky and good wearing but I wanted wide white walls so went with the Avons because the e 3s dont come with a wide white wall, Todd

Since We're on the subject, what would the average life of a rear tire be anyway?

I am pushing 8000 on my Metzler ME880 rear. My front had a bunch of life left when I introduced it to that van last year (7109.3 miles on it). I wouldn't chance it after the wreck and replaced it too. Insurance paid for it, why not? For note I am riding an 05 XL883C and weigh in at 260+. Never ride two up and never do burnouts (LOL have done a sliding stop involving a van once LOL). For my part there are no tires made but Metzler now. They stick really well dry or wet (WV you ride in the rain or you don't ride). They also won't follow the grooves in the road no where near what the Dunrocks did.

Just wondered where you got the Metzlers at? Online or a shop. Is that your first set?

Hey Dave, I got my Metzlers @ an Indy locally. Most bike shops won't mount tires not purchased from them. They claim it is insurance reasons, but it is about the only way they have to fight internet sales taking their business.

I'm running the Dunlop D401's that came on the bike. They grip well, tar snakes and rain grooves don't bother if the pressure is right. I have been getting about 15,000 on the front, about 12,000 on the rear. I could push them a couple more thousand, but when the tread gets thin the wet grip goes down.

Many metric shops will mount your HD tire on the rim, it's business they would never get, some Indy shops will do it, you will pay them pretty good though $40 or $50 a tire.

10 to 12 is the norm for me on a rear on a stock bike, on my 124 your mileage may vary from 4K to 6K LOL with Avons....

Front is typically double the rear.
