Okay, boys, I've been persuaded on all sides to get a CV40 carb for my '77 shovel motor. I currently have a Keihin butterfly, so don't know if I'll need a different manifold. Hope not. Might need a set of gaskets to go with it, though, if available. Interested in either a used or rebuilt CV40 carb. Thanks, Joshbob

p.s. Ahhh, it's one thing after another. How long, Lord, how long . . . ?

You could also use the original manifold and then a flange adapter. You'll also need to modify the air cleaner backing to match the face pattern of the carb along with a bracket to hold it all in place. Unlike rigid mount butterfly carbs the CV slides onto a rubber boot and has no way of supporting itself without a bracket. Using the original bolt-on manifold and adapter at least gives a little more positive support... though I rely solely on that to hold the carb up.

Thanks Johnny, I saw HarleysLR post first. I'll see if I can get something going with him. BTW, Merrrry Christmas to you & to all my new friends on Bike Talk who may read this. Mac the Wife and I are going out to the shop today when she gets back from her part-time job and shoot some new pics of me and ol' Bob. She tells me I need a haircut. Things have sure changed! One of the reasons she married me was that I had long hair in those days. It ain't so long now, but at least I still have some!

Kenfuzed, Thanks for the advice & info. Looks like there's some tinkering in my immediate future. I have a Chopper Dave's 4" air cleaner on the Keihin right now. That's going to be the biggest challenge, unless the bolt pattern lines up. Looks like they're all 120 degrees apart. I might get lucky . . .

    joshbob,
I also have a scream'n eagle air filter system that fits on a softtail, less the out side cover. I'll take pictures of everything and post them, tomorrow.

Update: I got the carb from HarleysLR but have not installed it yet. I've only seen rubber flanges online and I'm looking for a billet one as I have decided to keep the butterfly Keihin manifold.

Harley Performance has step-by-step instructions on your carb upgrade. I started there, and lots of folks here at bike-talk filled me in on the rest.

A CV carb on a Shovelhead is one of the best things you can do. I put one on my FLH. The only drawback is there is no way to hook the enricher up to the original dash mounted choke cable.
