i have a 2005 XL1200C with 34000 miles was told it had a stage one kit the bike has V&Hshort shots and screamin eagle intake with a K&N filter its ben runing good but started poping at idle i ordered a C V preformance kit it came with a 45, 46 jet and 180, 185 jet. i pull the carb off takeing it apart and clean it has a 42 jet and 170 jet in now the chart said to put in a 46 and 185 for stage 1
my question is it had a 42 and 170 should i go up that big or go with the 45 and 180. thanks

Typically I would say to just follow the directions but based on the extremely small jetting I'd like to get some more info from you first. A 42/170 combo is generally seen on 883 bikes, did this bike start life as a 883 and then upgraded to a 1200? If this was an upgrade then it likely has the 883 heads, in which case use a 45/180 jetting combo. The 2004-2006 1200 had different higher flow heads (Buell XB) which is why the jetting table in the instructions is so much larger. The 883 models from 1986 to 2006 have about the same heads and flow the same regardless of year. The distinction is very important. If in fact you do have a factory 2005 1200C then go with the jetting table based on the exhaust/air cleaner you have (46/185). It may seem like a huge step up but it is more than likely that you were running dangerously lean before.

If the idle is changing or moving on it's own then the problem is probably not carburetor related. Could be a range of things including:
Bad sensor (crank position sensor, temp, MAP).
Vacuum leak at the manifold boot, around the MAP sensor, or at the manifold/head flanges.

Determine first if there is a vacuum leak using propane (NOT lit) or WD40 sprayed around the manifold areas listed. If that checks out then check the sensors by obtaining any trouble codes.

    How to check trouble codes:

with the #46 jet it backfired on acceleration it idle ok
i changed the three seals and the one on the map sensor put a #48 jet runs good but will not idle you can set the idle and 60 sec. the RPM will drop start to cough and spit
i check for vacuum leak no leaks

If the lack of any vacuum leaks has been confirmed the next step is to check the trouble codes (see previous post above).

I would definitely replace the sensor and reset the code. Double check the wire and connector as well. Also check with the dealer to make sure the part number has not changed for your model/year.
