The tensioner wear could be a result of either high mileage or running low on oil when you were blowing it out the breathers.

I would buy the entire top end gasket kit, not just the umbrellas. As long as you have it all pulled apart might as well give your top end a fresh set of seals. I would even go as far as replacing the head gaskets... but I'm just the type that likes to renew as much as possible in one shot.

I'd also go to the SE Hybrid kit since you're in there...better oil pump and hydraulic tensioners..

This is what I would do.
I would call Bob Woods and tell him what you have. He has the cam plate, the lifters, the cams , quick install push rods and all.

The new cam plate will come with a new upgraded oil pump.

Do you know about Oil Pump alignment pins ?

And if'n I had it tore as far as you. I'd oull the cams and lifters to look at them.
If I did anything there I'd out new cam bearings. If your replace the cams replace the cam bearings and lifters.

:roflmao:well at this point we will never know what his problem was might as well put a big bore kit in it and do the heads hell you only got 2 more hours in labor left and youll do the top half . went from a fifty dollar rocker box gasket set . and you open the cam chest and went down hill from there brother
half way on the tensioner shoes aint nothing those things are like that at 10.000 miles i pulled mine at 22.000 and were the same way . and for the money you will spend on the new style cam chest . you can put a fueling pump in it with gear drives and never do tensioner shoes again the fact is the new style wear out as well . they still are shoes in the cam chest and will wear as well. well call zippers and order parts dude .get the big bore kit with the cam set and go at your there!!!!!!

Yep with as far as he has it and don't know where he might stop, he might as well go all the way.

If it was me. I would replace the shoes and or put it back together, find out if he's fixed the oil problem and trade it in on a new Bike.
    Then everything is New........
If it was gonna be a new WG I would look at a Fat BoB. Dual disc front brakes and it rides better.
otherwise I'd be lookin at a FL series.
But nobody know's what's going in Next... with this.........
It might be a learnin thing going on.

Wow u guys went out there fast! Lots of good advise but I am still at the under a hundred dollar zone. I removed the timing cover to get any oil sludge from the pump area that may have been trapped and to inspect the shoes I have not removed anything from the cam chest. My bike has 27,0000+ miles and it is time for a shoe change. after I find out if the breather assemblies were the original problem. I am daring with my abilities to take something apart and put it back together, but not foolhardy with the amount of money these parts cost. Knowing how the parts fit is not the knowledge I am after, the ability to diagnose the problem on the side of the road is were true wisdom lies.

:roflmao:I told ya put the umbrella seals in and its done put that thing back together and ride it fresh oil and a set of plugs you got oil press **** ya lubed the whole frame you know the oil pump works it got up there some how:roflmao: kinda hard to find sludge in a motor tat runs that kind of oil temp unless you dont change it often . sludge is created from unburnt fuel and very low oil temps that dont evaporate the fuel that is left over in the crank case are ol tenps very seldom under 200 f. aint gonna happen!!!!!

Exactly...do the breathers and worry about the shoes later...changing the shoes runs almost the same price as the SE Hybrid kit,so look into that before buying the spring loaded shoes again... as a bonus you get a newer upgraded oil pump with the kit

If he has the rocker boxes off, and he has the cam cover off.
If he wants to replace his present shoes, they are inexpensive and real easy to do.
He can pull his rocker arms and pull out the push rods and lay them in order and pull the lifters and the cams and replace them and stick em back together.
Mabe the 1st set of shoes might of polished up the chain some.
That way he will know its been taken care of.
Its only a couple hours more of work.
