Had a shovel that the advance weights stuck in the advanced position(to much washing the bike).Took the macanical advance wieghts apart and greased pins and it was great after that.

I rebuilt the solenoid, no improvement.
I rebuilt the starter and added the 2nd ground line from the batt to the starter and she starts fine now. The starter is about shot tho. It has play in the shaft and it was corroded inside. I cleaned it up and added some spray lube, also grease the gear assembly. Problem solved. I thought it was the starter from the begining. She's old and needs replacing soon. But she works fine for now.
    Thanks HRK.

Glad she works, yeah that ground issue bit me in the butt on my big inch twin cam, doesn't matter what engine you start, you need a good ground.

its just a ground, that's what I ran on my heritage
    it's a second ground path

you can bump it up if you want.

The starter on my bike had 2 steel roll pins that go into holes in the inner primary and into holes in the starter gear housing. They have since been sheard off and are stuck in the primary. How important are they to have in place?

Those are alignment pins, making sure the starter is in position so
when the jackshaft extends it's properly aligned, if you can get the starter
in a perfect alignment without them great, but if not you could have alignment
    issues and thus starting problems.

I would drill them out and replace with new pins, it's just an aluminum dowel
    pin.

    They are steel roll pins.
Not easy to drill out, almost impossible with the primary on the bike.

You would need a pretty good bit to get them out
or a machine shop to get them out and back in straight

Maybe Kirby has some ideas on how to remove them
as long as you get it aligned you are good but if a bolt
comes loose you could be in a world of shidt if the starter
shifts, be sure to use locktite on the starter bolts.

Hey guys remember me? Some of you helped me with my recent starter issues. We should all be starter expert at this point. Seem to be the season for starter issues. Welcome to the new guy. I'm pretty new myself. These guys are all Awsome. I added second ground wire to my starter issue (4awg) and it solved my problem. Amazing what one little ground wire will do. It brought my voltage up from 9.4 to 10.8 during start up. Wonder if I'll get more if I beef up positive from 8awg to 4awg.:D
