1987 Evolution Starter

    I sure do appreciate everyone's sense of humor here as I really need a little more of one right now. This is getting really expensive!

    To date I have done the following to try to fix this 1987 FLHTC starter that wants to continue to turn while the engine is running:
    2) Solenoids
    2) Hitachi Starter motors
    2) Relay switches

    I now have to buy my third starter because the same thing happened, again. The starter keeps running after starting the engine and after turning stopping the engine the starter continues to run until you can cut power from the battery....in my case both times they start smoking and die. A local indy did tell me that on some of the old Evo’s if you keep your thumb on the starter switch, continuously…..even during the tough part of the compression cycle, you can fuse the solenoid? So, here I go again.
    Should I just break down and replace the starter switch at the handlebars along with a new solenoid, relay and starter motor? Anyone have experience replacing the handlebar switch?

    The weather is too nice right now to not be in the wind!

    Have you tested the circuit

    The starter isn't the problem odds of three being bad are remote

    Don't hook up starter and get a cheap digital multimeter. Start with the relay to solenoid wire. If its hot with out depressing switch I bet it's a $4 relay that is not closing when you let off the button

    Fix the problem first before you put anything else in the starter

    I just got a multimeter and disconnected the "Relay" brown wire at the solenoid and connected it to the positive side of the multimeter. I connected the black wire to the battery ground post. Turned on the ignition, hit the starter and got a 12 volt reading every time I pressed the starter button on the handlebars. The relay made a clicking sound everytime I pressed the starter button on and off but got a definate 12 Volt reading that went to zero once I let off the start button. I then reconnected the brown wire to the solenoid and disconnected the cable running from the solenoid to the starter and connected the red positive lead from the mutimeter and then connected the black multimeter lead to the negative battery terminal and hit the starter button. The relay clicked and I got a 12 volt reading on the tester but the ignition lights went dark every time I depressed the starter button.

    Does this mean my soleniod is bad and now grounding out everything?
