Either quit rubbing it in or trade me :roflmao: .

Back to work so my mouse it working. I am in a F mood. F'n Cat, F'n Harley, F'n Cars, F'n World. Anyone care to take a guess if the Sporty is running or not. :fight:

Ok final update until I can say ok guys and gals this is what fixed it. (Guess is going to be new jets/Carb). I finally got to work on it yesterday and this is how it went. Started it up and let it set and run until warm. Adjusted idle up (still guessing at RPMs since some F'n jerk beat my bid on the tach, cause my F'n Cat, ate my F'n Mouse, and my F'n Computer was down, so I couldn't battle for it. :gah: Ok I will stop with the Fs now  ). After the idle was turned up it did ok, actually really well. Was taking fuel without a problem one. So I hop on her to take her down the hill and back. Across yard like a race car, up on the black top, and cough and the fun box began. I fought it and played with the gas all the way down the hill. Had the neighbor run his 4wheeler up the hill to get the screwdrivers. (note: GOTS to get a tool bag made). He came back and we fought it for 15 minutes on the parking at the bottom of the hill. Finally she broke through her coughing spell and started running. Handed the tools to the neighbor while I kept the gas shot to her and rpms up high, jumped across the seat and ran for the house. She is now back on the porch and snugged away until I get my book. The neighbor and I both feel she is WAY over jetted. Paying closer attention to how she behaves, showed she is loading up early out the gate in idle.

I really appreciate all the help everyone here has sent my way. (And the support for riding a Sporty :D ) I am still open to suggestions if anyone has more. The couple trips I have made to the lower parking lot and back has already shown me just how much I REALLY want to get this working. Pretty much all straight shot but everyone has been right, there isn't anything like it I have done before. I think me is already hooked, and I ain't normally an addictive type.

Ok Whacker I see no mention of trading me so I guess you aren't interested LOL.

Ok doing more searching, I can't get this silly thing out of my head. Found this stuff.

    Keihin CV Carburetor Part Numbers

I posted before that I had a 45 and 165 jet currently in this carb. From this list the 45 is more rich but the 165 is toward the lean side. As I don't know crap about this it don't make a great deal of sense to me. However I think I found what happened. Looks like ol boy (previous owner) got ahold of a link sim to this one. CV Carburetor Modifications or this one
    HarleyHelp.com

Reading through that last link I found factory is 42 and they say to replace with a 45. I don't recall seeing what looked to be any turns cut off the slider spring. I haven't paid close attention to the holes in the bottom of the slider but hope it wasn't drilled out. I will have to check both of this out more closely this evening. I am sure no filing has been done on the lip of the slider though, it is very clean and crisp 90.

If nothing else I am becoming familiar with my carb LOL.

Sounds more like a jet that is partially clogged

Clean out the bowl and blow air through the jets to get them clean, doesn't take much, if it won't run on the bottom and then runs only when at WOT or wider open sounds like the pilot jet is clogged.

Or fuel filter, fuel line, petcock etc.

Removed the shims/washers from under the pin in the slider. She has a very very slight backfire now. Actually have to listen for it over the sound of the pipes, but it is hidden in there. Otherwise I would say 95% of the BS has stopped with it and I have taken my test ride about 4 time this evening with minimum issues and my buddy came down this evening (since I have no license I won't get on main road) and took her out. When he got back he was impressed at the improvement in her.

I think the idle is still a bit high so I will tweak on that some. Got a dwell gage with built in tach that will work on 2 cyl 4 strokes coming and when it gets here I will set her up more accurately.

Guess it is about time to get my rear to DMV and take that written portion of the exam and get on the real road soon. I can't tell everyone here just how much I appreciate all the concern and help. You folks know how to make a newbie feel welcome. I will keep posted to progress, and can't wait to share my first REAL ride experience on here with ya. Thanks again

after removing the shims, did you adjust the air screw??? you may need to move it about 1/8th or so......when you mess with the inside, the air screw sometimes needs adjusting again, also when the idle is adjusted the screw may need adjusting....

Yeah Chuck I had to readjust the mix. Figured on that, but since it isn't quite there I didn't post # of turns. Once I get her working correctly I will post turn count on it too.

New update on this crazy thing.

I have no clue why she ran so well on Tues and Wends evenings but Thurs she took a crap on me again. :witsend: Back to the samey same. Finally got my Clymer in and went through it and found my "factory" jet sizes. According to Clymer I should have a 175 main and a 40 idle. Well as stated before I have a 165 main (previously shimmed) and a 45 idle. Went to my local HD stealership (normally a**holes, but were very cool this trip) and found they don't have my idle jet :gah: however they did have several mains for me. I picked up a 170 and 180, and then a 175 Screamin Eagle jet for the main. I also got a new slider (vacuum piston if you ask my locals) and a new spring for it. Figured all else fails I am going to cut some turns off the orginal one and see if I can get it to stop that fluttering crap atleast.

If anything I just posted sounds to be a problem to anyone please advise. I am starting to get skeered I am gonna break more than I fix with this silly thing. OH yeah I ain't replacing that slider until I get her behaving a bit better. Don't see any need to melt down the new one, with it backfiring just yet.

    Thanks again.

Just saw this thread and had to add my 2 cents. The 05 sporty comes with a 42 idle jet. It is too lean from the factory to run without coughing. Replace it with a 45 jet. You do not need to shim the needle, seems the factory got that right for most bikes unless you are running drag pipes. The fluttering of the slide is a problem and is usually an indication of a leak in the diaphragm. You also mention "backfiring". If it is spitting out the carb, you most likely have a leak in the intake. Try spraying brake cleaner or WD40 on the intake seals at the point where the intake bolts up to the heads. If the idle slows, you need to change the seals. And lastly, if everything is set up right, you should be able to settle on 2 1/2 to 3 turns out on the mixture screw to get everything running good. Also, check the seal between the back of the carb and the intake runner, they do dry out and crack and can take abuse from repeated carb removal. Good luck and study for that DMV test.

Ok back to this little pain in my rear. Got the 42 idle jet, reinsalled. Everything the way everyone says it should be. Runs a little better but still falls on it's face. When all else fails read the destructions right? Well I followed the procedure for checking the codes on the thing. Came up with trouble codes on the CPS (cam position sensor). Figured it could be timing a while back but timing is non-adjustable on this bike (stupid computers), however if this sensor is out then that would cause a "timing" issue.

I am almost positive my stealer isn't going to have this in stock, hell they don't stock anything else for my bike why have this. But on my way to work on a ford (another story of major ironic humor in itself) for a buddy I am going to swing by as the stealer opens (or try to) and see about this CPS.

Starting to feel like Johnny Cash, ONE PIECE AT A TIME LOL. I may never be able to say there's nothing on my scooter I can't fix, but by golly I can say there ain't much I haven't changed out LOL.

I wish I could say I came up with it all on my own but it is a very close paraphrase of another persons sig line on another board.

You know you have a point about that preditor being overworked. Maybe I need to change it to needs a preditor species :roflmao: I am sure we all know it would be a hardy species with plenty to eat. Hell they might die of heart disease from being over weight but never starvation.
