It's likely that the tray and cover are original, since the older Harley battery you have fits.

Either way you go, unfortunately, you're going to have to spend more money. It sucks and I know the feeling very well. Hope you get it worked out before you get some decent riding weather up there!

It would help if you posted some pictures of the tray and cover. If you need help posting pictures, I'm sure one of our moderators would be happy to show you how.

That makes sense, does the battery tray and cover have a PN

Be hard to stretch it an 1/8"....Sporties and Dyna's use the same battery...Possible the lead/acid batteries were a little smaller than the AGM's...Side cover and top cover from a newer model should work...
It would be nice if you could find a try before you buy deal locally or had a buddy with a Dyna or Sporty you could try their cover for fit...

    Yep, can't stretch 1/8".
This is what I know so far:
    1. This was a parts bike, bought it used, there's no part number on the cover
    2. If I do a search on J&P Cycles for battery tray it comes back with OEM Reference: 66191-73. It says it won't fit my '82, but if I change the year of my bike to '79 it says it fits, leading me to believe that possibly there was a battery hardware change in 1980.
    3. I've found 2 different Harley part numbers for the battery side cover, 66070-83T, and 66340-78 they both say they fit a 1982 FXE.
    4. My current cover has 6 small "square" battery cell view holes, the above part numbers have 1 large rectangular view hole.
Here's a couple pics of my cover
