One of the things that him and I are going to do is go to one of the largest custom bike shows around here. My dad said yeah that he I'll go. Again, just something to gauge his interest in being around bikes.

Git him to try to wait till HD has Demo Days.
You can talk to the Harley dealers and sign up online for them to send you emails on demo days.
Take yer dad, make sure he has eyewear, sunglasses. Gloves and boots.
And he will need a motorcycle license.
Start him on a sportster and work your way up, making notes of everything he likes.
Then come back and get him to ride them again and again.
Then go rent one and ride it.
    Usually 1st decisions can change.

This is something the Harley offers to try to let people get a better understanding of their bike s, how they feel and how they ride and handle.

I agree but I am not even sure he will buy an HD. He has a long ways to go, he first needs to get his permit. We have a long ways to go. This bike show is for me to gauge his interest in the visual way to see what he is after so I can help. When he gets his endorsement then we will do those things.

Take him to a Harley dealer and sign him up for a Riders Edge Class.

A street glide is not my first choice. Lol. But yes, that was a long the line that I was thinking. He liked the heritage and road king. He really really likes my Road Glide.

When the weather gets better let him ride the wife's bike for awhile so he can get used to the clutch and some riding. Then when he feels comfortable take him to a riders edge class.

A used Heritage would be good, low center of gravity, easier to get up off the stand
lighter than an RK and narrow makes it easier to maneuver in the parking lot or moving it by hand.

Also a ton of customization stuff for them, any 00 and up Twin cam is a good bike
look for a used one someone dumped a ton on with all the bling...save him some Green.

That's what I was thinking to after riding the wife's bike and then getting his motorcycle license. Also depending on height for guys who are not real tall the Harley Softail Custom is another good choice.

In the end I am going to let him buy what he wants, but I am not going to let him buy a bike based off pretty much just looks. He liked the Road King but I am sure that will change many times over before he actually buys one.

So many bikes,so many choices. All have good and bad things about them. Besides Harley you have the Shadows are nice, the 1300 custome line is too. Good luck.

I'd be somewhat intimidated by the size & weight of the geezer glides and be more inclined to start out on a smaller, lighter bike.

My buddy down the street had to come get me last weekend to help him pick his Heritage off the floor of his house. Yup, he pulls up a ramp and parks it in his living room. Said his foot slipped backing it out the doorway and down it went. You shoulda seen two old farts with bad backs lifting that behemoth up LOL. We somehow did it without injuring ourselves.

That is a good technique. I can lift mine up with no strain just by grabbing the handlebars and lifting. I guess because it's less than half the weight of a bagger and has a very low center of gravity.

I am guessing that he will get a smaller bike. But if he decides different, AWESOME!

Sounds like your on the right track Jon , if dad decides to go Harley you can also look at some older models evos are Fairley cheap in price , still a HD & not as costly as a newer one You know your Dad better then anyone here ,so if he's trying to make it to ride with you & that's about the only time he'll ride that's the way to go

And in my limited exerience I think the 5 speed carbed EVO is the best HD for your money.

I just spoke to my dad yesterday and he went and got his book for study. It won't be long and we will be in the breeze.
