I have a 04 883 converted with a 42mm mikuni. Backfireing from carb at idle and takeoff. Runs perfect once moving. I had Harley jet carb. They put a #155 main, And a #22.5 pilot jet. THis confuses me. According to the mikuni book, Std is #160 main and #25 pilot. Book says its to lean so why they downsize? Do I need to rejet larger or adjust jet needle?

Check for intake leaks first, if none then rejet and see if it fixes it, change only the pilot jet for now, the main has nothing going on when you start or just start rolling.

If the above does not solve the problem I would re-check the timing. Ride Safe, David.
