The chopper wiring info and schematic I got from Bitter End Choppers says that 14 ga. wire is good for a ground connection NOT USING A STARTER and only using minimal electrical requirements. I'm using a piece of 14 ga. wire to ground. All other wires are 16 ga. The older pic doesn't show all the wiring. Bike runs. Battery charges. Lights are strong. No overheating of any wires. No problem. (see new pic).

Just went out to check on the oil pump and . . . . it still leaks.:cussing::mad:

I would never run a small ground wire, they can carry more current than you realize. 14 is the size they run in 15 amp house current. I think I would up the size to at least a larger size to at least at size 10.

I would agree to Napa, better to be safe than smoking on the side of the road.

#10 is a little small too...I'd run at least #6 or #4 AWG...DC is different than AC...#10 is good for 30 amps AC...less resistance(heat, voltage drop) with a heavier cable.

Using a heavier return won't help because the total electrical load with everything on at the same time is around 10 amps - high beam, tail & stop light. That's all I'm running. There's a 15 amp breaker for those plus a 15 amp fuse for the ignition switch plus a 30 amp fuse for the charging system. Chopper guys have been using this type system for years with no problems.

Remember, you guys have lots of electrical accessories on your bikes plus starters.

Josh your right , but a better ground wire will save you a few head aches down the road , the rest you have is good for your set up

Yup, even with new gaskets. HRK has hooked me up with California Phil and he can get me a new S&S pump much cheaper than the one I was going to buy. So, next week I'm getting a new one.

And when the new crankcase oil seal arrives from J&P, I'll be taking off the front pulley & Rotor/stator and fixing that leak. Then it's hooking up the brake lines and I should be ready to ride.

    But I've said that before . . . .

I will. I mentioned you to him when I talked to him yesterday - then sent him an email with pics of my bike - he likes it. He recommends I use the orange Fram oil filter like Indian Larry used to use.

BTW, I think I have a length of 8 or 10 ga. wire around, so I'll make up another ground cable from that.

I think the Fram filter might be a little too long. I have a short Evo filter on it now and I just have room to get it off. Besides I like "plain" stuff, like the Shakers - plain & functional.
We have built some Shaker style furniture in my shop classes (see pic) for the school auction every spring and bidders snap them up every time. Very popular. (Oops! Here I go, hi-jacking my thread again!)
