Yeah, that chrome top cover really makes a difference in the look of the carb - now, if it will only function like it looks! Sent a M.O. to CVP for the spring & elbow yesterday. This time used a certified letter.

Tomorrow, I'm going to try and get the old crankshaft/oil seal spacer out for a closer look.

As far as I can tell, these are the last things to do on the build: replace oil seal, get the pulley & belt back on, and get the carb bolted on after new parts come in.

But I've been saying that for over 6 months now . . . .

Today, I installed the oil seal & reassembled the open belt (see pic). I'm hoping the carb parts from CVP will arrive sometime next week. In the meantime, I have a few questions.

First, I have a needle that has 6 slots in it, plus a washer (see pic). The c-clip is now set on the 3rd slot from the bottom of the needle. Is that okay? The needle came with the carb.

second, I'm not sure how to take the stems apart to install the dyna beads (see pic). They don't give details about how to get them out. Will I get flat tires when removing the stem guts?

Thanking you now for your input, boys.

Not sure on the dyna beads, but can't you just remove the stem and go from there?

That needle is set for the bike that the carb was taken off of. I would bet that you will have some tuning to do. If I were you, I would probably set the clip in the slot that allows the needle to sit all the way down without the shim. (Washer that you are talking about).

You use a valve cap like one of these to remove the core...[IMG]

Not sure why there is a shim with that adjustable needle...other than thinking the previous owner of that carb was a total moron...why shim an adjustable needle??...maybe though you should have ordered the complete kit from Ken with the needle, spring, emulsion tube and jets...that way you'd know they will fit together...whatever kit that needle came with may not be able to use stock or CVP jets...

I did order that stuff from Ken but the order got lost in the mail. Since that time, I got #50 and #165 jets (J&P), a Harley vacuum piston, and all the pieces for the enricher circuit (also Harley). Ken is sending me a vacuum piston spring & high flow elbow - could be here by the end of the week.
The only thing I kept was the needle that came with the carb, thinking it would be alright. JB says to move the c-clip to the top ring on the needle and get rid of the shim (washer).
I thought the same thing as you about the washer. Using it would alter the setting of the c-clip.
Do you recommend I get the N65 needle from Ken?

You can try what you have first...clip in the middle setting like you have it,without the shim would be more like a stock setting...you'd move the e-clip up to lean it out(lowering the needle) and down to richen(raising the needle)....start in the middle with it....

the "shim" is a small flat washer that keeps the c/clip off the slide......

Okay. I'll leave the needle set as it is, without the washer. Ken E-mailed me and said my parts were on the way! Holy Stromboli, Batman! Is the end near? Will justice finally prevail? After 29 months, will all the blood, sweat, & beers (actually, there were no "tears" - I would substitute swearing for tears) finally pay off?

I do need a few other external carb parts, but they can wait. I can get the beast running without them. They are: EZ just mixture screw & repacking kit, and an idle speed screw. And maybe, just maybe, a V-ductor.

Ok, I was not aware that the shim that JoshBob was referring to is in there to help keep the c-clip from moving around. Although he does not have to use that shim underneath the needle. If he needs to really fine tune, there are half thicknesses that he can use as well. JMTC

Okay, so now I have several opinions on the washer. I don't suppose it would hurt to use it, but no one has explained to me why it's necessary. Stock needles don't have them as far as I can tell from the exploded view I have of the CV carb.

The purpose of the washer is to raise the needle up out of the main jet. That needle sits in the middle of the main as your fuel needs fluctuates due to vacuum the needle allows or disallows fuel to pass. The further out the needle sits of the main jet, usually the faster the needle raises which give a more rich mix.... I think...

My mistake joshbob...My only experience with an adjustable needle is on my Mikuni carb...I couldn't remember a washer under the e clip,so I checked the manual and sure enough there is one....

Okay, I just went out to the shop and dropped the needle in with the washer. It's going to be biased toward being slightly rich and that is fine. Better rich than lean. It's a good starting point.

I'm also going to change the gas in the tank - it's been in there since early summer. The gas I drain out I can use for cleaning parts or making a concoction known as "Open Switch" (Equal parts gas, kerosene & buttermilk)! Only kidding!

I can't believe how warm our weather has been. I hope it sticks around a few more weeks . . . .:D

Our weather here has gotten cooler - night time in the 30s and daytime mid 50s for the next 7 days. Caught a cold yesterday. Ugh! today, I found this tree ornament gift wrapped on my side of the bed - hung it on the tiny tree in the man cave.
