    Other side. Still have a bit of tweaking to do, but must wait for more cash. I haven't completely figured out what chrome to keep, what to "black out" yet. I definitely like the new quick detach HD bags, so I can be a convertible, but they cost $1,100, yikes! I'd like to quick detach my windshield and bags for local rides and pop them back on for the longer highway rides. I haven't tried the solo seat that I have in my closet yet, but will soon. First thing, since it's affordable, smoked lenses. I hate the amber and red combo and prefer all lights to be the same color, whatever color that might be. My "5000" mile tune up is coming soon. I have two months left on the warranty, so I should take it to HD, just in case. I'm trying to make the final "change to syn" decision before taking it there. This way, they can do it all at the same time.

    Hellboy, run the redline heavy in that trans, syn won't increase the whine it should help eliminate it.[/QUOTE]

    If you run HD syn3 in the tranny like HD says you can I guarantee it will make noise, tried it long time ago Redline to me is the best choice for the tranny. Screw the recites, let them prove it if your using Redline.

    There have ben internet rumors of trans failures with the Syn3, although I doubt it seriously because it would be a major issue and HD wouldn't put it in the bikes.

    Having said that I did try it in my 5 speed, didn't do anything to improve shifting, then again it didn't hurt as far as I could tell.

    That Redline Heavy Shockproof gear oil did smooth out the shifting.

    Bike looks good.

    Search Ebay for someone selling takeoff bags...

    FLHTBiker, I went to the Redline site and found your links to:

    * 20w50 Motorcycle oil
    * Shockproof V-Twin transmission gear oil
    * V-Twin Primary case oil 75w140

    Are those the right weights for my Street Bob ?

    My new 09 ultra still had the Harley oil in it and it was a real pain getting it into neutral and shifting was hard. I just changed all three holes last Saturday in it and that is what I used.
    The shock proof gear oil made the trans. shift really smooth and I can finally get it into neutral much easier. We went for a ride with another couple Yesterday and the trans. was much quieter. It has been said by more than one that using a good synthetic oil that you can run it longer before changing it. I know of a bike builder/mechanic in Seattle area that says he changes his engine oil at 10,000 intervals and he uses Amsoil synthetic. However I would watch it and I'll probably change mine at 6,000 miles still using 20-50 Redline Synthetic engine oil.

    Thanks guys, I'm thinking I'll go for it and switch to syn. Thanks to your help, I found a Redline dealer that's tolerably near my HD dealership. Now, all I need to do is find a place that REALLY knows how to properly flush the engine for the change to syn. I've heard rumors of various types of methods, but should do some more exploring. I think I'll start a new thread regarding this, since the bike washing questions are clearer now.

    I dunno where the heck you're getting this stuff, and not trying to be a Smartazz to you but just change the oil LOL

    And quit googling dyno vs syn LOl There is so much old missinformation still on the web about this subject its not funny

    Bearing skate, over slippery, causes leaks in old motors blah blah blah :banghead:

    There is not any "purification" or "expunging" of the old oil that needs to be done to switch to syn from dyno or back. Think about it, what would you use for the "in between" lubricant "semi-synthetic"?

    Anyway as long as they can change oil properly you'll be fine.

    Just make sure the bike is warmed up properly (not 30 seconds of idle time) drive it about 4 to 8 minutes get it warmed up so the oil is hot and ready to flow then drain all three holes, fill them back with the lube at the proper amount. Change the filter on the motor as well.

    You're done.

    Thanks again FLHT and hotroadking. You've not only been a wealth of information, you've been generous enough to take the time to let me know about it. Also, thanks for the heads up about Mobil syn3 and the noise. I'd heard so much conflicting stuff it was getting me dizzy. I was also really afraid of getting a whine in 5th gear that would bug me no end. I was also worried about things like old oil staying in the bike and how to scavenge it all out, but it's funny, the top wrench at my dealer was saying not to worry about changing to syn, you can always change back and it's no big deal.

    I'm definitely gonna go redline ASAP and will keep you posted. I have to do it soon because I only have two months left on my warranty and if the shifting doesn't improve and getting to neutral stays so difficult, I will let Harley figure it out on their dime.

    Good to hear that reginasaskatchewancanada. I like keeping the bike clean and polished too. That's one thing I like about the Street Bob, less chrome to deal with, yet it doesn't look too blacked out IMO.

    you'll be fine
    it'll all work out

    BTW Mobil 1 is my preferred motor oil the vtwin stuff.

    As far as tranny gear noise there is a couple of good articles in the hot bike rag out now, Burt Baker does a good write up on helical vs straigh (dog) cut gears.

    Helical are quieter but cost more power due to the way they mesh, epa noise regs are pushing manuf like HD to helical gears.

    racers or power brokers don't want to give up one iota of power, so they stick with straight cut gears, more area and more noise from the teeth slapping (for lack of a better term) together, less power loss but a bit more noise.

    HD has kept a straight cut 5th gear in the 6 speeds that's why you hear more noise, 4th and 6th are helical, thats why it's a bit quieter,

    Thanks HRK, my 5th gear doesn't bother me at all. In fact, I'm thinking of putting in the V&H "Quiet Baffles" to replace the ones my V&H Big Shots came with. It's only a 3db drop in level, but that may help me stay under the radar here in NYC, if you know what I mean. I sound like a truck right now, but it's a very cool sounding truck ;) My friend has the 07 Dyna Wide Glide and put in the Quiet Baffles' and the volume difference wasn't too drastic and strangely enough, he got a slight improvement in performance!

    Hellboy, your friend may have better performance because he may now have a bit better back pressure.
