I have a 1970 xlch and the crankcase vent tube is an open tube. When the motor is turned over air is sucked into the engine through the tube and also air blows out the tube. This can't be good because dirt is entering the motor. What is the best system to install ie:pcv valve and filter. And also should the tube be connected to the carburator air intake manifold.

They can have a filter put on the end custom chrome makes one, you're talking about the vent tube, I believe vented to the backing plate and then the mist is reburnt and less polution.

Most put a small filter on the end of the tube.

Jirehs Cycle catalog or online Jireh.com sells a great billet engine breather collector can with K&N filter. Cost is $89. You just run a rubber tube to the inlet of the can and you can drain it whenever you want. It small and looks trick. Keeps you from running oil mist to your carb where it will eventually condense and coat your air cleaner. It will also drip from the air filter.
