Thanks chucktx. My manual has an exploded view, but it's not an H-D factory manual. Thought maybe they left something out of the picture. I guess the pump works better when the float bowl is full of gas.
Puttin' carb on next weekend for sure. (My job is 100 miles from home, so I'm not there very much.) I'll let ya know what happens. Thanks for all the input.

Factory SM and Parts catalog are 2 tools you should really have, esp when you have an older model.
Make sure the accelerator pump diaphragm doesn't have any cracks or tears, check around the little metal "dish" in the center of it.

Wide glide- As long as ya got it off and are messin with it ya might want to pick up a V-Ductor from CV Performance and put it on too. Better mileage, faster response time and is a cheap add-on that works. Check out the posts on this forum for comments from from the other people who have tryed it - no negatives at all. - And yer pocketbook will thank ya for it.

Another exploded view I looked at shows a check valve under the accel pump nozzle. I don't think i want to mess with it if I don't have to. Looks like the brass nozzle self-destructs when ya take it out.
Might order the V-Ductor after I get the carb on and any bugs worked out. How far does it stick out from the carb flange? The filter that came with the SE air cleaner isn't very wide, maybe about 1-1/4".

Finally got the carb on. Wow. Starts easier, warms up faster, runs better, even sounds better. The drilled slide seems to work ok, don't feel any surging. Ended up with the 45 slow jet, 185 main jet, XL needle, idle mixture about 3 turns out. Feels a little lean at WOT, so I might go up one size on the main jet. Spark plugs look good. Fuel drips out of the overflow for a minute after I shut it off & lean the bike over on the kickstand, so maybe the float level is a tad high. Set it with the carb at a 15-20 degree angle like the book says, but I can tweak it a little when I change the main jet.
I think the ol' Wide Glide is ready to ride over the Rockies now. Gotta visit some friends in Grand Junction next summer. Thanks for all the input & advice, everybody.

Yep, bigger main jet made a big difference. Gas drip was caused by really really fine sand in the needle & seat. Musta got some crappy gas somewhere. It got through the petcock screen AND a sintered bronze inline fuel filter...
But now all is well & I'm happy:D:D:D with the whole upgrade thing. Thanks for all the informative answers to my dumb questions.

Doesn't take much to let fuel past the needle valve, glad you got it all straightened out, the CV carb and 3 piece manifold is a huge improvement over the butterfly carb and those dang compliance fittings.
    Enjoy the ride:devil:
