People confuse voltage with amperage in charging systems. Think of it as your bank account total. The battery is the bank. Voltage is the work you do to keep your bank account up. If you spend your money (amps) and do no work (voltage) to replenish your bank account (battery), when you finally do try and recharge it, you will slowly burn yourself with overwork. You are the alternator windings.
If you drain your battery, a good slow charge overnight is always preferable to a road test/charge. A depleted battery will never fully reach its potential if only the alternator is used to charge it. It will shorten the life of the charging system, as you will shorten you life if you overwork yourself to cover overspending.
    Stupid comparison I guess.

that is because you got to have it idling over 1000 rpm for it to charge.

If you are buying a new battery for your harley go to Batteries Plus and get a Extreme battery. Very good battery.
