the factory service manual will give instructions on how to pull the codes from your bike. it will be a series of flashes, not sure what bulb will do the flashing. the book will list the flashes as numbers with a corresponding code...

    What year bike?

On my 00 Heritage there is a white 4 pin connector under the seat
you can jumper two of the pins and the Engine Light will flash the
code for you when you turn on the switch, ignition switch must be set to
    run.

Your manual will tell you which two pins for your bike.
You may want to pick up a couple of HD female pins to
put on the end of a 6 inch wire, then connect
to the pins in the housing.

I just hold the wire in place touching the pins

It will flash the first number, then the second

so two flashes, followed by three would be 23

It will cycle through all the codes.

If the light comes on and goes out it's sensing
something not right for a short period,

If you start the bike and the light comes on and
stays on it's recorded a "hard code" one that is
    always a problem.

You probably have a loose wire/connector somewhere.

The bike is a 2001 sportster.
Where do I need to look in the manual to find this info? I looked under codes and engine but did not see it.

I can't remember the section but it would have to do with the ecm or checking codes,
not sure on the sporty, look under the seat for an open connector, mine is white plastic, inside you will see 4 silver pins, it's square, you need to know which pins are correct to jumper, the others will not do it.

Have to look at the book again this evening to get the section for you when I get back to the house...

Hello there...In my case I looked up that harness and swapped it out this spring. I just got a good deal on the ign. and polished mikuni 42 so I wire those in. It worked great and ran fine just have that engine light starring me in the face now. I thought may there was a sensor I could loop around to shut it off. Thanks for to my engineer for his help and advice.

    Regards,
    Anthony
