Your right Panthera and I use a screw type lock with a key. Not only does it keep the hitch on the ball but it also keeps someone from undoing the hitch and taking off with your trailer.

I would consider an upgrade to a bigger a bike, you just keep adding more stuff to this one. Glad you are having fun though. Stay safe!!

Not sure if that would help, all the standard big twins are the same engine (except softails, which are still 96 inch, but counterbalanced). The larger bike would help in stability, which isn't a big problem with this one. The advantage to this is when I take off the trailer and hitch, I still have a machine that can handle the curvy roads quite well.

The larger bikes are considerably heavier as well, so would actually reduce potential performance. I think that is why all the owners of larger bikes quickly make engine modifications to increase the performance.

Isn't that the idea behind a Harley? Your not getting a motorcycle, your getting a hobby! Adding, modifying, tweaking, and generally playing with it is part of owning a Harley.:D

Yeah, but I think that since the you have a bigger bike, wouldn't you think that the extra weight would not throw you around more when the trailer starts to bounce? I have ridden a couple of big twins and really the only mod I would make to those engines are the pipes. (The only necessary one).

For sure, when I bought my bike and started to change things, my wife just could not understand why I was doing that. I told her that that was the fun of having a bike. She said it was ridiculous, I said I know of no one that buys's a Harley and leaves it stock.

if the trailer starts bouncing, you done something wrong, or on a hell of a washboard road and need to slow down............

We had one of those Coleman little trailers. The shell was all light weight plastic. Had leaf springs on it. If you pulled it empty that thing would bounce all over the place, but then who pulls an empty trailer around. :)

Heck of a great little cargo trailer.

I just spoke to a dealership again today, in there getting primary oil, and trailers just happened to come up. I asked the particular salesman that i have had to get used to because the guy that I really liked is no longer there, anyway, he said that if there happens to be a hitch on the bike, HD will void the warranty. Now he said HD will do this, not the dealership. I told him then why would another dealership openly sell bike trailers in their dealership? He had no reply.

    Any thoughts?

That's because he is just a salesman who don't no sheet. I've had and many others I know who have a hitch on their bike have had then in at the dealer for warranty work and they don't say nothing.
If you had a dealer that said that then take the dang hitch off before you take it in for warranty work.

I've heard the thing about HD voiding the warranty from a service guy up this way. I told him that if there was a problem with the bike that they'd best fix it or i'd be coming after them because they took my money for an extended warranty knowing that I pull a trailer. It was the one question I asked the warranty person at the dealership..She didn't know so I told her she'd best phone the company to be sure. They said OK. I had a problem with the cam tensioner/ bearing..they paid.

When going through Chicago (never good roads in the best of times) I took Hwy 194 instead of 294. It was mostly under construction, and very rough. Needless to say, I'll be taking a different route back. The trailer springs are too stiff as well, so the trailer was getting hammered going through that. They should have put a warning up 'Off road vehicles only'.

On the regular roads the trailer pulls smooth. I need to soften the suspension for the rough stuff.

Before these trips, I spent 8 days and several thousand $$$$ remodeling the bathroom. Looks good, but the toilet doesn't go any faster still.......

I think that I will put a hitch on. I think that I would like to haul the stuff way behind me rather than strapped to everything, besides, when I go on a trip, I will most likely have my wife with so I would like to make sure is comfortable. A trailer sounds good, since I have swayed in a different direction for which bike I want next.:wtf:

I personally have yet to see a bike fail from pulling a trailer, Harley or Honda Goldwing.
