Oil seems to do fine. I run Amsoil 20-50 year round in the engine and primary - 75-90 in the tranny. The coldest I will ride is around 19 degrees and your just talking a difference of 10 between the 10-40 and the 20-50. My last metric was a 1500e Vulcan classic. Extremely cold natured especially after the stage1 upgrade. Anytime I came to a stop or slow down for a turn, I would need to pull out the choke just a smige to keep it form sputtering when reaccelerating. If I would rich up the carb to cover that problem, I would tear up the gas milage. Probably should have done a 2-1 exhaust instead of true duals which would have conserved a bit of heat and back pressure. Yep, where you are it get below zero - way below zero. About the coldest it gets here in NE TN is around -10/15 then the wind chill will take it a bit lower.

Check the HD manual, I think it gives alternative oils (thinner) for cold weather use than 20W-50, I think you can run a 10-40

Never rode a kicked up 96 but the stock 103 uses the same cams as the 96. Was told that it would really wake the 103 up to install 103 cams. Never heard of those as a specific option. The Asst. Mgr. at my dealership put a 103 kit with milled high flow heads, cams and V&H 2-1 exhaust on his 96. Dynoed at 115 RWHP and 114 torque. We went riding last Monday a week ago and his bike was doing pretty good. He says he can tell a real difference but then look at the numbers he got over the stock numbers. Sort of an expected outcome with that combo. The 96 on the Heritage liked to roll at about 70 on the Interstate but the 103 likes to run about 75-80 with about the same amount of throttle so I back off and run around 70 - when I'm paying attention the the speedo. But when we tried out our Limited, I could tell an immediate positive difference in the power over the Heritage. And yes when we tried the Limited, we were two up because when I was looking at the Limited, we had only had the Heritage for 11 months so I really needed my wife to buy into the Limited. Anyhow, I hope somewhere in this epistle I gave some similance of an answer.

You're right. The manual does give the 10-40 for the colder weather but let's face it, I'm just about at my own cut off riding point to where I just stay home and hate it or if I get really desperate to get out, c-r-a-w-l in the cager and go...................:(:(:(:(:(

The numbers that were coming off of that 010 SG were not that good. They were close. If I remember right I believe that the torque was at 97 ft/lbs and 104 HP and it was at about 3500 rpm when it came in. I had the bike going about 80, then it seemed to be ok. I might have put different cams in this bike to use the lower rpm range a little better.

I took an 08 X-Bones out and it had the 96 with no modifications. I was more impressed with the performance of the 96 than of the 96 kicked to a 103. I understand the weight difference, but it was like night and day.

Yeah. Every once and a while I get the urge to do more to my 103 but then I come to my sences and realize that it's doing everything I need for it to do and that quills the urge at least for a while (as if I'm trying to convice myself).

Well by no surprise, the ride home was more enjoyable than the morning ride. The temp was 40 degrees. Cloudy but nice. Supposed to get downt o 26-28 tonight and sunny tomorrow. Plus get all the way up to around 44. Reckon I'll ride again. Supposed to turn Saturday and have some rain/snow mix. My wife has a LOH meeting so we'll be taking the cager there. Have a GREAT evening and a good day tomorrow.:D:D:D

Hope you have a GREAT, SAFE and WONDERFUL ride to Pueblo. Bet you'll enjoy the vest. I been looking at the heated clothing too. We were about 10 degrees warmer this morning - 33 - but it felt cooler due to the humidty being up. But it is still just great to feel the freedom of the ride.

There's not enough difference to tell......... One bike has a minute larger piston. Were talkin about fractions of a inch.
