What is not to like about the 6 speed? After having one when I ride a bike without one I find myself trying to pull an extra gear all the time.

I just don't like the extra shifting I guess. And it does depend on what the final ratio is. I have ridden some 6 speeds and and while in 6th, i just didn't like how it Felt i was lugging the bike. I am not at the high interstate speeds enough to justify it.

Wouldn't have a touring bike without the six speed. Your RPM's run higher on a five speed.
Been there done that for to many years when touring.

Not on a touring bike. My next bike will be a softtail. Running at 3700 at 85 mph doesn't bother me because that is about as far as I push my Road Glide.

Yes which bothers me. For where I like the power to come in on my bikes 2500 is too low. I would still have to down shift to get back on the cam for passing power. Don't misunderstsnd, obviously 6 speeds have their place but for my riding style I much rather have a 5 speed.

They do if you are at the higher speeds often. I rarely ride 80 mph so 6 speeds are useless for me most of time to gain it's benefits. My dad's Heritage is the perfect example.

Same here and shifting down has never been a problem and lower RPM at freeway speeds helps the motor.

was doing the metric math with this one. I'm kinda onboard with Johnny on this. If I'm alone no trailer, on the flats yeah I'd likely pop it up to 6th. but I like to have the rpms at around 2800-3200 so whatever gear has my engine there is the one I'll pick.

There is the key statement though. I am rarely on the interstate. Most of the time I don't use the interstate. I tend to ride at 60 mph because I prefer not to use interstates as much as posible

I don't ride much on the Interstate either, so then I just leave it in fifth. But when you want to cruise 65mph or faster on any road, then you have 6th gear. To me it's a win win. 6 speed is more versatile I believe, their is no extra shifting until you need it.

I think its more for a touring aspect. You know when you're on that long stretch of Iowa highway going 70+ lock it in cruise in 6th gear and motors not working to hard. I like that part. I think 6th gear is more of a tourers option.

Well I thought when you own a Harley touring bike that, that's what you own a touring bike. Otherwise you might as well just buy a Sporster.

Then you can do back roads leaning down and low. Or buy a sportbike and really carve up those back roads.
