I have been keeping a pretty close eye on my bike for a little while now. I just got back from a 2000 mile road trip and my oil consumption is 1 quart per 1000 miles. I don't like that at all. Derek is looking into the issue now and after some discussion, we both are leaning towards bad valve seals. Tomorrow I will know more as I have to go there to mock up my EFI tank. Hope it's a simple fix, I don't really want to put more money into this engine.:(

Well I'd just run a qt of oil through it per 1K for the summer
won't hurt anything, and you are taking it apart anyway this winter correct?

Yes that is the plan. I spoke with Derek this morning already and as of now he isn't seeing an issue.

He said he put a camera in the plug home and he did see oil sitting on the top of the piston. Coming from some where.

    front, back or both...

If it's just one, a rainy afternoon and you could pull the rockers and the head
have a new seal and back up and running in a day.

plus you need something to work on anyway...

Front cylinder. He is replacing the seals without taking the head off. He has a neat tool that allows him to do that.

I was thinking it would be you as lead mookanik

Yeah they have some tools for that which precludes
    removing heads.

I guess I just need to come to the realization that there isn't anything wrong with the 98", at least not to the point to where it's going to grenade on me.

True, you've been bit by the power bug, once you get some
you can't get enough, it' just gets worse build it up, drop in cams
do the heads, next EFI, bigger pistons, bigger cams, better heads

after that comes belt to chain conversion, clutch, etc etc...

    how fast ya wanna go?
how much you got to spend....

Growing up I was always attracted to cars with blowers or cars that special attention to performance was in mind. No different for me with bikes I guess. There is a stopping point for me, I just haven't gotten there yet.
