If you read the whole thing you would have noticed I was saying it both ways.

Tommy, I still like the oldies like my 75 FL shovel. You're right, they can be fixed easily, even on the side of the road in an emergency. They have character the new ones don't have. And you're a hero if you still ride one.

New machines are very nice too, just a lot more complex. But nothing is so complicated on a Harley that you can't figure it out on your own without having to take it to a factory technician. You can't do that with a BMW so you have to stay close to dealership.

I ride every week with a couple guys who have BMW's. One is a 2010 RS 1200 with only 8,000 miles, and the other has the brand new LT 1600 6 cyl. They always joke about riding behind me to catch all the parts falling off my bike.

When we stop for breaks, I quietly listen to them moan about having to take them in for simple things like changing a burnt headlight bulb ($300); leaking fork seals ($550); leaking cv joint seal ($400); valve adjustment ($500).

The brand new LT 1600 already had the traction control computer fail (warranty, 3 weeks in shop); 5,000 mile mandatory valve adjustment and warranty required checks ($1100 I kid you not!). Premature clutch disc wear ($3,000) that they haven't decided who will pay for that.

I just laugh at their "Superior German engineering" and I now ask them before each ride "Can you afford to ride with me this week?"

All new motors are built by robots. I assembled mine myself the day before the bike was built, just taking a few precautions like balancing the flywheels, careful matching the pistons rings and rods, close attention to cam fit and bearing install. Everything was stock parts. Have never taken the bike in for any warranty repairs at all. Never has seen the inside of the service dept.

    Funny, that's ridiculos~! $300 to replace a headlight bulb~!? I'd be complaining too.
Thank you Alex. I agree the old bikes do have character, a look, a sound and they are just as beautiful.
Nothing sounds like a shovelhead. I would love to own a panhead too. :p
I am proud to ride a 35 year old motorcycles. They are fully restored and I did the work myself. Knowing how everything works and being able to fix anything on your bike is part of what being a "biker" is all about.
Anybody can turn a key, press a button and ride. Not everyone fully understands how their bikes work and exactly what to do when something goes wrong.

I told you how much I like my Homak tool box! Just kidding.

I like my little tool kit that came with the bike too--all tools stamped "Harley Davidson" made by a Colorado company called Western Forge. They also make Craftsman hand tools.

My shop tools are all Proto Tools and Mac, with a couple pretty Snap-On thrown in.

FLHT sent the jesture to me. Because I love the new bikes. I like going on trips and if I need help from a dealership I can pull in one and git it.

You can tell when a old Bike comes by cause the put is slower and the sound is different.
Was somewhere a couple weeks ago and heard something totally different.
Looked up and a old Flat Head Harley came putting down the street.
It turned everybodys eyes and heads
If you want to ride a Older bike that's great.
I've riddin them since the days of the panhead forward.
I sure like the smooth ride of the new bike.
Guess I'm becoming a Candy As* and getting Old.

I like both old and new.

I wish I had bought Chucks Pan,
I was a day late and a dollar short.

Looking for an FLH, want to add the faring, box, white bags
get it looking orignal but it will have some hopped up internals,
    mild but still..

When I was younger I was sittin in the living room watchin TV, heard something in the kitchin makin a noise.
Grabed my Universal Pass and ran to the kitchen real quiet.
One of those things was in the sack of potatoes sittin on the floor eatin on them.

I rented another apartment and had a mattress on the floor. One got in the bed with me. It stuck me with the barbs on its legs. I was drunk and freaked out.
Had a hard time going back to sleep.
Had em in the old house I own now. I sprayed the whole house.
Then weeks later I went into a True Value Hardware store and go the Harrison roach tablets and threw them all into the attic and under the sink and all.
Didn't put any where my dog could get to them
I've been pretty well rid of them or 18 yrs. I've had one or two. I killed them and that was it.
They come into yer house for food and water.
They freak my OL out. She will not even git close enough to kill one.:gah:

Nope, no thanks I've seen enough spiders over the years crawling under houses when doing home inspections.
