Regular Harley oil is Dino Oil which there is nothin wrong with.

Have a friend in Utah that's done his time in MMI years ago. And has been a mechanic and dyno man in Utah.
He runs Harley Dino Oil in his bike.

SE or Screaming Eagle Oil is fully Synthetic and there's nothin wrong with it .

I've use if off and on for years.
You can use a these folks to test yer oil after you run it if you are still happy.

Oil Analyzers, Inc. - Oil Analysis, Oil Testing Services

The main thing I will say it to change yer oil and filter every 3000 miles period.

If you use regular HD oil for the motor, make sure to change it every 3,000 miles. I still like a Synthetic oil made for a V-twin. I would not as stated before use the SE engine oil in the Trans. Stick with a gear oil.
You also need to stick to one type and stay with it, especially avoid switching back and forth from a Dino oil to a Syn. oil.
Both Redline and Amsoil V-Twin motorcycle oils are designed to work with your motorcycle and are superior oils for both engine and trans.

That's my plan FLHT. Since I switched from dino to syn for the tranny and primary, I'll stay that way now. It's only that after I switched to syn in the engine, Harley insisted I switch back to dino (long story), so I did. Therefore, I'll stay with dino in the engine only, avoided excessive switching of oil types.

I called Amsoil today. The tech guy recommended 75/110 SVT (severe) gear oil for 6 speed Harley's and 20/50 for the transmission..

Everybody you talk with is gonna recomend somethin different.

A MMI graduate and HD trained Harley mechanic that works at a HD dealership also suggested for me to use 75-250 oil in the tranny.
And he uses Harley Dino Oil in his build bike and changes it every 2500-3000 miles.
The HD dealer recommends Formula Plus in the tranny and primary. And 20w-50 in the motor.
If you pick a good V-Twin Oil and keep it changed , it really isn't gonna matter.
    Just keep it changed.

Cardboard is right on, what ever V-twin oil you put in there whether it be Dino or syn. just stick to it and keep it changed, probably a little more frequent for Dino oil

Will do, thanks guys. I felt a slight improvement in throttle response and a slightly smoother idle after changing the motor oil last month. I'd run about 3,750 miles before that oil change, so I'll definitely be changing before 3,000 miles from now on.

hellboy that's the main trick , is keeping the same oil & keeping it changed at 3k intervals or dare close to it & always change the filter every time you change the oil

I have the K&N filter, so should I simply clean it? I think it needs oiling, but I forget, it's been a long time since I even thought about it. Will check the plugs this week too, as I'm not sure. They're probably whatever Harley uses at the dealership. I'm going to an INDY shop for the oil change, as I need to begin developing a relationship there anyway.

visit your local auto parts dealer.....they will have the k&n recharge kit.....good for many cleanings.....follow the directions......piece of cake.
harley plugs are great plugs. might be a buck more, but they are better than most........i change mine about twice a year.....at around 7/8 thousand. overkill, but cheap insurance that the plugs wont let me down........

As far as synthetic harley oil goes im not sure but im pocket and brain doesnt like keeping oil in the bike for long......

None of our vehicles have had horible amounts of oil sludge cause we change it often....... And dont use high dollar stuff

    Just FYI
All HD oils Syn and 360 are made by Citgo

So if you like supporting Chavez and his neo Nazi socialist regime buy it.

I prefer not to support Chavez... JMO...

We need Oil whereever we can git it.
And We haven't lost any blood with chavez.

But we are buying the heck out of it from the Arabs and they hate out guts and we are at war with them right now.
A lof of folks in the world are dying too.
So my question is, is the arab oil any better to buy than the oil from Chavez?
