I don't like laws that infringe on ones freedom. Lets put flight helmets on Obooma when he's in his choppers and AF1.
My story: going to office one morning on my bike. Approached wooden gate to parking lot. Flashed pass and gate rose. I start moving thru and WHAM on my helmet. The f n gate came down hit me square on top of head. Some genius put a piece of angle iron on gate cause people were breaking them. Iron cracked a Snell approved fiberglass helmet. I had to go to chiropractor twice a week for 2 months to fix my neck. Stupid things happen. Murphy's law. I wear a helmet always. My choice.

We all should have the right to chose, BUT I dropped at a parking lot because #1 dirt caused poor footing, #2 stupid enough to be for a short hop, had low sneakers on foot rolled over, #3 a few sodas. That was last summer , my foot is still not happy. My head SLAMMED on the pavement as I did the ungracefull dismount, glad I had headgear on. We need to accept the fact that shtuff beyond our control can happen at any time at our own hand or the blue hairs or a person texting. Ride safer and longer IMO and hope we dont end up a veg from a head injury. If it broke your neck it most likely would have split your head, still your choice.

I guess we have been lucky here in Hawaii..... no helmet laws since before I started riding back in the '80s. I have always chosen not to wear one because the theory behind helmets is to survive the accident and my theory has always been to simply avoid the accident in the first place. I pretty much believe all accidents are avoidable.

    Helmets should be a choice.....not a requirement.

That being said....after getting married last November, I have increasingly felt that while I have always been content on my own to take my chances with accident avoidance, this not a chance I am willing to take for my wife. And since I don't feel right asking my wife to wear a helmet if I am not...I got a helmet for her and one for my self as well. Still haven't tried it...kinda working into it. I will try it soon.....not today though....maybe tomorrow.

    Aloha....Mike

Long as it fits right LOL. I think my beanie doesn't fit me right, thus it's very annoying to wear it. I got what I paid for: cheep, cheep.

I do think that some accidents are unavoidable. Like being rear ended at a stop light. Nowhere to go. At intersections, I leave a little extra room between me and the vehicle in front and always look in my mirror when somebody is coming up behind me when I'm sitting still. But anything can happen to anybody at any time . . .

Joshbob leaving enough room to get the hell outta the way and keeping an eye on your mirror is exactly what makes getting rear-ended at intersections avoidable. And you are 100% right anything can happen at anytime. Which is why when I'm riding I am continually scanning and evaluating whats going on around me. I look for the worst possible things that could happen to cause me to be involved in a wreck of some kind and then I prepare for that very thing to happen by planning my defensive or evasive maneuver to avoid the accident. Once I have determined the worst case scenario I don't just ride down the road knowing the worst could possibly happen...I plan and begin to implement my "ecape plan" (like slowing down or changing lanes or lane position or even speeding up in some cases) so that I am ready for the worst case scenario when it does happen.....Thats how I avoid accidents and also why I feel most if not all accidents are avoidable.

    Respectfully.....Mike

I think most of us try to do those things you spoke of. It's second nature to me now - to look for things when riding. It pays to be a sober, defensive rider.

I don't believe in forcing any one to ride with a helmet ,it's up to each person i myself ride with it most of the time because I know guys that have gone through windshields and the only thing that saved them was the helmet . There are times that we just cant control the situation , ride what your conferrable with not with what other's say , it's not a fashion statement

    I agree !

I've lost some good friends over the years, cause they wouldn't wear a helmet
One was my Uncle in Panama City who was headed to Daytona for the Rally

Got some others that had wrecks and I know one wreck my buddy back home in Bama. His son had the fastest Kawasaki at the time
His son had somebody to turn in front of him when he was hauling ass
He laid his bike down and slid into the car
The FF Shoei helmet saved his life
He still keeps the helmet in the closer for friends that don't believe I. Helmets

I don't care if yoy wear or not, but the black top is harder than yer head

The state legislature is going to vote on the helmet law next week. Lot of riders I know waiting to see the outcome. I know three or four who will not wear one if it passes. Couple of others who will continue to wear one.

It's so unusual to see N.C. voting on anything that will result in less goverment interference in our lives.
