Dang boys, just got the news this evening that the academy will reopen for the upcoming school year. Some powerful people in our community got together over the weekend and replaced the "do nothing" school board and got the rest of the funding needed to stay open another year. I hope the new board will be looking to the future and hire someone whose job it would be to recruit new students to our school. Many, many prayers have been answered.

I sure like the way this thread turned. staying alive for one year is good, hopefully it will turn into a long term affair. I've been in situations working on term employment, not a lot of fun. Hope it all turns for the long term good.

I'll say! Going out for a ride this morning with a whole new mind set. I will be contacting some people to try and get more information, like who the new headmaster/mistress might be. It's certain they will pick someone from among our staff. Anyway, I'm celebrating today. It will be so good to see those kids again back in school here.

Josh, not been on in a week or so, just picked up on this thread. Sorry brother, could tell from the way you talked about the academy that you really liked it and the kids. From living with a teacher for 36 years, I get the picture, it is really about liking and caring about the kids. When that is the case and you have talent like yours, something good happens. Something will work out brother, hang in there...

Well, I do have a few other irons in the fire in case the school only goes another year. Yesterday I discovered our new headmaster is a retired attorney from Scotland Neck. He's around my age and from what everyone says, a good choice. We lost some kids, how many is hard to say at this point, and we lost at least two teachers.

My other "irons" are that I'm going to set up a website and begin selling my original artwork. The other is my novel, "Ain't Got No Home", in which I have been attempting to peak the interest of a literary agent. I really don't want to go back to pounding nails again LOL.

I figure I have a year grace period to make these things happen.

Josh. Forget publishers. Do it yourself. Amazon has a way to self publish

There are a lot of ways to self publish and they all end up costing the author money, sometimes thousands. Self publishing is known as "vanity publishing", as most beginning authors just want to see their books in print. I'm going for the whole enchilada or not at all. I want to be published by a respected, known publisher and be handled by a reputable literary agent. Takes time that way and usually many rejection slips.

However you could do a short story yourself and see how it works out, that gives you creedence when trying to line up a publisher where you'll be a small fish in a big pond...

I have written 5 short stories and am looking to get them published in magazines right now. It would help to get a few out there - would look good on a resume. There are also writing contests that I'll be entering as well. Yup, I'm a small fish in a big pond hoping to make a big splash!

I have a 10 year old guitar student. He is one of the boys I had for art the past several years at the academy and lives here in town. His mom dropped him off yesterday evening for his first one hour lesson. Man, that guitar he has is huge! It's a dreadnought style acoustic guitar and a bit too big for him. But we will try it for a while and see if he can make the adjustment.
