How important is the packing washer/o-ring?

Just wondering, is the o-ring on the mixture screw really needed? I've seen hundreds of other carbuerators over the years, on both bikes and cars, that were made w/o o-rings, which makes me wonder if it's really needed in the cv 40. Don't get me wrong, it seems like a good idea, but is it necessary?

Yes, absolutely necessary on any of the Keihin CV style carburetors. By design the o-ring prevents both fuel from seeping down around the threaded portion and also from a slight vacuum leak forming in this same area at idle.
