Only the front/outside chain is the new type...you still run your original inside chain with the HD Hybrid kit...Andrews conversion kit uses all '07 parts but then you have to run an "N" grind cam with that kit...
The chain does polish itself some while wearing out the original tensioners, but it's a good idea to make sure it's polished and smooth when replacing the tensioners

As usual, very informative stuff, even if some of it is opinion. Of course, my shovel is a gear driven cam so there's not much chance of timing going south. Always wondered why HD went to chain driven cams if there's a possiblity of timing changing with chain stretch. Some things seem more thought out than others on the V-twins, I guess . . .

Supposedly they had to change due to noise emissions.

Yep but when you make the engine quieter you can get more sound from the exhaust
you just have to hit a db for the whole thing, so making the mechanical less noisy is good.

Open the hood on a new car and you see all kinds of plastic add ons and covers
    all to reduce sound...

Fatboy really? Honestly I find that hard to believe the cone motor shovels didn't make any loud cam noise, the generator case motors did but they stopped making them in '69

Frankly from what I've seen so far from these twin cam motors...I'm not all that impressed with em. Kinda thinking about picking up a '95 or '96 Touring bike and stroking it out and just staying with the EVO motor.

I see lots of em on Ebay. They are too new to be classic antiques and are still dropping in value. Thats the thing about Harleys, the day you drive them off the showroom floor they instantly drop in value and keep on droping for several years until one day they stop dropping and slowly start going back up in value and they keep going up until eventually they become worth more than the original selling price.

    Aloha...Mike

Yep...EPA Noise Police is the reason for HD's silent cam chains...

IMO '96-'98 carbed Evo baggers would be the ones to look for...damn near bulletproof and the newer switches that are a little better weather proof wise, not that I've ever had a problem with the '82-'95 switch housings getting wet inside...Don't necessarily need to stroke 'em to make them a fun ride either...good cam and a bump in compression....

But in defence of the Twinkie, once you get rid of the spring loaded tensioners and you don't go crazy with hop ups,you can have a good reliable bike that'll log a lotta trouble free miles...but there are a lot more electronics in TC's than an Evo...Hall Effect ignition sensor is all I can think of in an Evo for sensors

Newer twin cams are easier to work on. Got better heads. Better oiling system.
Easier cranking ...better brakes... Ride better...handle better .. Motors run better than all the hype you hear.
HD didn't build them for you to start building them to make a lot of HP.

    Do a little more homework..

Thanks CB and Charlie46, you iz making me feel better about the twin cam.

I guess I kinda like the older stuff cause I don't have to think too hard about it. The same reason why I like carb over FI. I've only got a few good functioning brain cells left (product of the '70's) and I hate to over tax those lone survivors on stuff I don't understand so much.

    Aloha...Mike

PS Lucifer.....Let me get to the points.....er ah point that is....love your avitar....I'd like to see a high resolution copy of that one ;O)

If was in the market I'd get another twinke softail
for baggers, 09 and up a used 09 gets you the new engine mods,
electronic throttle, 6 gal tank, new frame, wider rear tire, all
    the suspension upgrades. Major improvement.

Nothing against evos but I've ridden my buddies 98 RK
nice but my 11 RG is 100 times better...
