might want to consider getting a dehumidifier on the system
in that you have to replace it do it right, that way you won't
be doing it again in a few years.

Buying the better product and a good reputable install
is cheaper than paying little for it up front and having
to replace a compressor after the warranty.

Well my neighbors buddy Archie showed up before 6:00 this mornin. He knows I leave at 7:15 to 7:20 am
He got up and drove like 35 miles or farther to show up at my house and look at my Unit.
He took a flashlite and shines up into my ceiling vents.
Non of the other air conditioner guys has done it. I have flex venting.
He showed me how the slick part of it was gone. Said the insulation is gone.
He found only one that has slick inner coatin on it and said see that one, that's how its suppose to look.
He made his way to the attic, when he climbed into the attic he looked at the unit there and asked, why was it installed backward. Huh !
Archie said you got to climb over the unit to work on it or look at anything.
I said I bought the house from a dude I met and he had a dude to come up from about 90 miles away he knew and had it put in.
He looked at how everything was put together and said I seee you had a wasp nest at least over 12" around.
Yep I sprayed over 300 Red wasps last year coming out of the roof from where the pipin from the air conditioner goes in to the attic.

ARchie climbed out of the attic and went to the Return air. Said why is it on the floor. Guess cause that's where the dude put it 20 yrs ago.
He opened it up and looked up toward the ceiling.
Said look here, I can see your unit in the attic. You are suckin air from the house and it is going up into the attic and freezine the evaporator coil up.
This is why your electricity bill is so high.
He walked outside and looked at the air conditioner unit on the side of the house.
Took all his notes and said I wil email you and call you with a estimate.
He said Your return air will be on the ceiling. We will replace all your duck work. Its worn out.
I will give you a price on a new heat pump. You can deceide on a American Standard or a Ruud. I'm gettin a better warranty with the ruud, got more places for parts for a ruud. Got one in my house and I haven't had many problems with the Ruud in 8 yrs. If I put a Ruud in and you don't like it. I will come back out at my expense and put you a American Standard in at my cost if you don't like it.
The Ruud unit I'm pricing is the Ultra unit.

I will give you a price on both the Ruud and the American standard.
He called me about 2 hours later.
The American Standard unit was 700.00 more.

I said since you are my buddy Tracey's friend, and you have put other folks off to git to me when you are booked up, If you like Ruud better and you guarantee it . I will go with it.
He said I will finish up what we are worikin on, Pick the unit up, duck work wiring thermostat and will show up 1st thing Friday and put it in Friday.
    I said Thanks you.

yap sounds like you found a good company to go with, nothin wrong with Ruud units worked on alot and they are built good..they go by the Rheem name also same unit different color. Good luck I think you will be pleasantly surprised when you get your first electric bill with the more efficient unit, new duct which is required to have thicker insulation than it did 17 years ago, and with all the air leaks sealed.

I think you'll be alright, like I said most of the parts are the same, made by the same companies, most manufacturers only actually make the sheet metal and coils..and not all of them the coils, and assemble them. just pay more for the American Standard/Trane name:D
