O.K. I’ll take the bait, just what does a site/forum cost to operate. I have no idea. Who regulates this type of thing? You just have to pay for the domain and your bandwidth? Fill us in, maybe then someone not so financially challenged will step up to the plate.
    Just curious.

Well...I'm not very computer literate (as many on this site have also confessed), but I sure do hate to see it go away. I have not been real prolific here, with my own writings, but have read every post. I feel like I know so many of you from my readings. Don't know that I am capable of maintaining the site, but I would offer to help any way I can, whether it be with my time, my minimal computer skills or monetary donations.

Okay, here is the hosting information.

    1. buy a domain name as it cannot be the same as it is now. www.bike-talk.com is available and from www.godaddy.com is $8.95 a year.

    2. www.zerolag.com will host it for $15.00 / month and can leave a link active to bounce it to the new domain name www.bike-talk.com.

That's pretty cheap and if some of you can get together and pitch in you could keep this thing going strong.

Since we are shutting down the phones and email addresses, please post your questions here.

I really hope some of you will step up to the plate and keep this forum alive.

YAHOOO (not to be confused with the email place)

ALLLLright! We can do this **** I will contribute a month and the domain name money ...and I am sure that a lot of people would do something as well.....all we need is another 11 people that will do a month or 33 that will do 5 bucks....hell that is less than going to a movie. Is there a way to set up some sort of deal where we could just make a payment? What do we need to do? I have some time I can volunteer, not a great deal but a few hrs a week at least. I have no idea how these things work...but even if I am half burnt out and senile I can still learn a few things. Come on we can't let this just slip by.......let's make it happen.

Well,,, I think this can be do-able. I would like to think that CD will give us another week or so to get our doo-doo together. All we have to do is assign a manager and about 3-4 moderators that will share a 24 hour period, you know, for those that like to cuss and flame others; I’m talking about those that drift in and will cause trouble... As far as the money goes it’s a lot cheaper than I originally thought. So, my only real question is do we use zero lag’s computer as the server or do one of us have to have the capability to be a server? I know my computer would not make a good server.
    Food for thought.

I think Chuck would be a good manager. I can throw in some money. I know nothing about hosting a website or the work involved in it. This year is busy for me..getting married, union collective agreemen and work so time I don't have a lot of but I can ante up about 50 bucks..just need to know where to send it..when I get some time I could learn to help out..let me know where to send the dough.

I'm committed to a months payment we only need 10 more. I can help moderate most days if so desired. And let me know if we need a server I might, I say MIGHT, be able to swing one of those too.

    Things needed to host

    1. You do not need a server. Zerolag will host (provide server, Internet connections etc) for $15.00 / month.

    2. Someone has to step up and purchase the domain name i.e. www.bike-talk.com runs less than $10.00 a year at places like www.godaddy.com they can even host it but, I would be leery of it because of the no "ads" clause. www.zerolag.com will host and leave a redirect (very important) from this URL (http://biketalk.directparts.com) to the new one (www.bike-talk.com).

    3. Maintenance and moderation is easy. Several people can be Administrators and others can be Moderators. Admins have control over all site functions, Mods have control over forums and some things like member timeouts. Mods and Admin preferences can be set by the site Admin. V-bulletin is great at helping with setup and sends updates to the site Admin for changes etc. There is a "how to" forum at their site also.

    4. It is easy to add things like "Donate to support this site" as suggested. The headers like the top one and others like sidebars are easily edited. The Photo galleries (separate software) would be included.

    5. I am not 100% sure, but I believe that since it is already established at www.zerolag.com setup fees to alter the hosting should be minimal. Vanessa@zerlolag.com can give specifics.

    6. I will help the site Admin get going. I would walk them through the initial setup in the back end.

Come on, team up and keep this thing going!

The only request I have is that in the header it says something like "Founded in 1997 by Direct Parts" or the like. Sort of a legacy thing ya know...

I received a private message from a Ken about the web site and am posting it here so that everyone can see it.

My name is Ken and I've been following the threads regarding moving the Bike Talk forums to a new host. I was unable to post to the thread so I thought I'd contact a few people personally.

"I think I can help here with keeping Bike Talk alive. I've been running the site Harley-Performance.com for several years and was in the process of setting up a new forum. My old forum is obsolete so I purchased hosting and all the software to run a new forum. I also purchased several domain names for this purpose, which is how I cam across the thread on Bike Talk. I can host the forum for free if everyone is willing to move over and help out with moderating. In fact I already own the domain name "Bike-Talk.com" which was going to be used for my new forum.

Please contact me at or share this info with the others on the current forum.

    Thanks,
    Ken"

Don't really know anything about him does anyone else?

ken also contacted me....with a bit more info....here is the post:

My name is Ken and I recently found the posts regarding moving the Bike Talk forums to a new host. I was unable to post to the thread so I thought I'd contact a few people personally.

I think I can help here with keeping Bike Talk alive. I've been running the site Harley-Performance.com for several years and was in the process of setting up a new forum. Thanks,
    Ken

has anyone been to the harley preformance site??? i also dont know him, but before i started posting to this site, i didnt know anybody here. i took a quick look at the site, and it has a lot of info, but i didnt see a msg board.....i dont know a lot about these boards, but i dont see where anyone could get in trouble or lose by letting someone run it. we need to remeber cd's request about the establishment of this board, and i think we should somehow incorperate a big thanks to cd and direct parts on the new board....a permanet thanks....what ya'll think.....we need to do something quick or it is gonna be to late....the offer is to host for free, then help out...we kinda know what the cost would be from cd's post...not to pricy...few bucks a month if i remember right........if the cost gets driven up, we would know where the heart is,,then have to regroup......also i think it may be a good idea to maybe give each other email addys.....to the folk ya dont mind having it.....just another thought.....brain is workinovertime.....

Greybear, so lets do it and control it ourselves if that is what everyone wants or we can let someone like this guy do it. If we did it ourselves then we can call it what ever we want and can decide that in private if that is the way we want to go. Call it bike talk II or something like that.
This guy does brings quick resolution to the situation. We also could host a bike talk at Delphi forums which is not bad but does have advertising.

I would be willing to be a moderator but if wen were to go to this guy then what do we need from him for assurances.

He said he can't post here does this mean he can't register because the site won't allow it or does Ken not want to?

wow greay bear, we posted at the same time, and i didnt know you could get all that info....i emailed ken asking what fees he is requiring. in a nut shell what does all that info you got mean??? in english:D ;) lol lol we have known about this site shutting down for a while, and havent done anything yet.....maybe all ken is trying to do is get this ball rolling. if ken is wanting an arm and a leg to run it that is one thing, but if it is resonable, as cd was saying, it would be a place to gather........if not, we dont have to participate. most of the other msg board are very large with to much going on for me. if kens site stays small like this one, i would give it a go, to see how things develop.......just my 2 cents
