    Save the trees Josh..

If you have a tech Idea just pm any mod and they can put it in for you, it's just the function of moving the thread

As cowboy said, it keeps the bs posting where a thread will go sideways into political or cheetos whatever from detracting from the subject..

we're pretty informal here as to threads and where they lead,

The problem is when that kind of post is put up no one but a Mod can even ask a question about it. So it's still better to put it in a regular post.

The BS on postings is something were all guilty of except maybe for JB. I think as Moderators we really should really regulate the BS better and keep it to a minimum so it does take away from the original posters intent. I also think when posts go on and on forever and the original content has been beaten to death I really think we the Mods should close it.

That sounds reasonable. I'm always interested in saving trees :). We all tend to get off subject at times and I can see where that could become a nuisance on a strictly tech tip thread.

I think that forum was originally suggested by Chuck (could be wrong) as a place to post helpful tips pulled from other areas of the forum. It was purposely locked to prevent tech questions that should be posted in the Tech Talk area. We can revisit how helpful tech tips are handled by perhaps making certain ones a Sticky at the top of the Tech Talk forum. I can see where this would cause confusion but I do like the idea of being able to locate popular tech tips. If making a topic sticky doesn't fit the bill then perhaps tips would need to be collected and posted into a blog-like page instead.

If a thread has strayed far off topic and the original post has already been covered then I see no reason why the thread could not be closed. New threads are easily started if others feel the need to carry on conversations started elsewhere. I know there are other forums out there that are micro-moderated to death so its always a fine line when deciding what to close and what to let run its coarse. No right or wrong approach so I leave it up to each moderator, though I'm always willing to be the tie breaker or heavy if need be.

I find it interesting that since the Tech Tips forum began, there have only been 30 tips posted so far. Surely there should be more than that by now.
