I went to a dealership today to check on some things for BlackDangerous. The ride to the dealership was nice, a little brisk, but I am riding. I get to the dealership which is not the one that I frequent. Now, my stay there should only be about 20 min for what it is that I need, but ends up being like three hours as they were able to get my bike into the shop. They got it done and I went on my way.

I was riding east bound on MN Highway 55 just before a town called Eden Valley, actually just outside a town called Paynesville. I just got up to speed, put my feet on the highway pegs. Traffic started to pick up so I took my feet of the highway pegs. I am scanning the traffic and at this point I am behind a school bus. To my right I see a compact SUV coming to a stop sign. Now the bus that I am behind is turning right at the same intersection that this SUV is stopping at. I slow down slightly (below the speed limit). Sure enough, the SUV pulls out and I had to get on the binders. I did lock the brakes, I skidded. I smelled the SUV's gas spout, that is how close I was to nailing it. My bike almost did, but I was able to keep the bike upright and avoided all contact, but I am telling you it was close. After this experience, I pulled over to check my jockey. There was a truck behind me and it pulled over to ask if I was OK. I made it home but man was that close!!!!!!

It was absolutely horrifying!!! I think what saved me was that I did not panic. I did what I was taught to do. SCAN!!! What is really ironic is that at my last H.O.G. meeting were talking about how cages don't see you and how much more careful we have to be out on the road. Goes to show that no matter how careful we are, dumbass cagers still won't see us..

    More Lights,

The RG dual light puts out some light but sometimes
I think cars don't see it as a bike as well as the three light
    on softails and other baggers.

LEO here use the triangle approach
    center over two fogs.

I ride with High beams on all the time
aimed them down just a bit never get flashed
by cars or willing co-eds for that matter....

Keep yer eyes on the fries...

Glad yer OK. Following big vehicles is always dangerous. The idiots ASSume that once the biggie passes they can jump out. I NEVER follow right behind biggies. I like to lead 'em whenever I can. If I gotta follow, I'm way back so I can be seen. Also, I got me a LED headlight and I believe that helped alot in daytime. JMO

glad your ok . bet that bagger stops better than the sporty with those big brakes !big bikes tend not to slide the ass end around like the lighter bikes also! that seat ot sucked up when the ass hole was puckered up . lol

Glad your ok buddy, riding bikes gives a whole new meaning to driving defensively....cagers just don't see us or when they do they can't judge the speed we're going.:banghead:

I was probably 100-150 feet behind the bus. That cage should have seen me as I saw him in plenty of time.

HRK, not sure how good those lights will do me in the daytime, but in the night I can sure see the advantage.

BP, you have no idea what I wreck I was. I didn't get off of my bike when I was on the side of the road, but I almost turned into more of a frootloop..:gah:

My Cajun friend, you are so right about us having to be even more careful. After I got home I said that I wasn't going to get on the bike again for the night. well that lasted for about an hour. Wife and I went out and I did notice that I was scanning even harder...

Glad you were OK. You are right, being alert and scanning for potential dangers and predictable idiocy is a very good first step to not getting hurt.

This incident makes it twice that I have come that close to crashing. The other time was with a deer. I just can't believe how close that was without actually hitting.:banghead::D I keep going through that in my mind.

At least you didn't bend up the SUV..;) But seriously the person in the SUV didn't know that you existed because he or she was focused on the bus. Our motorcycle club had a safety specialist visit us at the last meeting and he pulled out a video on how we can be so focused we miss something and something big.
try this video and not read the comments. I had a deer scare last year and I really see the value of ABS and was part of the reason I'm replacing a perfectly good motorcycle with a new one..likely the last big touring rig I'll be buying. Glad you're ok.

Glad you made it through OK. Yesterday, while gassing up,a Melbourne cop struck up a little friendly conversation with me,nothing to do with close calls, but as he departed he said "Oh bye the way, they(cages) ARE out to get you. Sums it up,I would say.
