Thanks for the tip. I always wondered what the honing was for!
The rings wear in together with the cylinder material to create a good seal, correct?

rings mate to the cyl. when you pull the jugs you are going to see a shine in the cylinder if you set the new rings in those cylinders the surface finish will be to smooth for those rings to seal on that finish , if your rings are moly low tension rings the hone you will use 280 grit hone . if your rings are cast a 220 grit hone is what they call for. when you hone the cylinder use a very lite oil so you can cut quick and stroke the cylinder from top to bottom that will give you a nice crosshatch and allow oil to travel nicley around the rings to lubricate the cylinder walls correctly . and dont over hone the cylinder 10 or 12 seconds at a low speed on a drill till the shine on cylinder is gone then get your crosshatch and your done . ;)

    Thanks for the info.
What if I reuse the same rings? Just oull the barrels off and put back on. Do I gotta hone them anyway or just with new rings? How do I tell if I need new rings? The rings are only about 10k miles old.

Have to switch from external oil lines to internal oil passages. I might have to pull the jugs if the oil passages are blocked off at the bottom where they meet the crankcase.

No problem. Maybe you forgot 'cause I ask a lot of questions. I like to fully understand things and I'm still learning.
How do I tell if the rings need to be replaced?
    Thanks for the info!

    Sweet, I had 2 stangs. 1993 LX and a 2003 Mach1. The Mach 1 was fast!
I'm definetly a speed demon too. I'm thinking about putting an air shifter and NOS on my
93"er. Just for tickles and giggles..

Had a 150 shot on my 86 Vette took over a second off the 1/4

Tommy when you take off the cylinders, don't remove the pistons
drop them to the bottom of the cyl by rotating the rear wheel in 5th.

I put the head bolts on the cyl with the heads off and use cut down pieces of 1/2 inch
PVC to simulate the head and hold the cyl in place when doing this.

Once they are at the bottom, remove the bolts and pull up cyl keeping piston in cyl

once the piston clears the case, you should be able to stuff a rag in there, remove the C clip retainer on the pin and slip out the pin. now you rings are still set in the piston and there is no reason to bore, hone, change rings etc...

    Reinstall the same way...

Hot road king, you are a sneaky lil Devil!
    Thanks for the tip.
I might be able to remove the allen screw in the bottom of the jug without pulling the jugs completely off if red loc-tite wasn't used.
I will let you know, thanks again!

    small torch on the screw,
heat it before you try and loosen,
    Loctite returns to liquid state
with heat, a small torch will do it.
