I met John Sachs yesterday. He is going to modify my carbie, manifold and my new STD heads. Nice guy. He's gonna bore the carb and add a thunderjet valve. He's gonna clean up the manifold and add external oil lines to the heads.

Do you know if an o-ring manifold work with band style heads?

My head bolts are old, should I replace them or no? Do they go bad?

    If you took them off
    Why
If I took them off I would replace em cause they stretch
But if they are on the bike and everything is o.k
    I would leave them along
If you pulled them and are reusing them
Make sure you oil em so they torque down good

If they are original, and have been on and off several times you might want to consider replacing them, they take a ton of TQ to get set right and you really don't want leaky heads, enough stuff leaks on Shovels you don't want to assist it if you don't have too.

I will, thanks. I guess it's worth the $55 to not have leaky heads.

It's worth the $55 to not have to do it again, and buy all new gaskets, and take the whole bike apart again...

I'll have to agree with that saying!
I always try to do it right!
That's why I'm asking the questions now.
    Thanks!

    okay, studs too.
Question: If I split the cases apart does the crank assembly just lift out? Is it pressed in or just the bearings are. The problem is the oil passages in the crank case have been welded up and need to be drilled out again. What a pain in the keister!

why do you want to split the cases, is there a problem
that needs addressing or are you going to do some
    upgrade/maintenance to keep it fresh.

If theres nothing wrong leave it alone. JMO

However I believe you'll need to press things together
and you'll need a press to get the old bearings
out, and new ones in, plus you'll need to setup endplay clearance
etc. yamabond is the best stuff to seal the cases (yeah yapanese)

Talk with John about going through the bottom end if you think it needs
it... He's got the tools, specs and will be setting up the clearances...

The oil passages in the cases are sealed up, the old heads had external oil lines going back to the oil pump. The new heads don't have that. The only solution I know of is to redrill out the oil passages into the crankcase. Therefore they need it come apart.
The crank just lifts out, right? or does the pinion gear need to be pulled off first?

    Oh Geesus !

Let me ask you something, before you go threw all this, you ever thought about using somebody that is really good in the business or buying a New engine.
These folks are great on old engines.

Thanks but I'd rather learn by doing the work myself.
I'm trying to figure out the best way to go about solving the problem.
