I wouldn't put anything on it to protect the chrome because whatever is on it is
still going to rub it anyway.

Get a SAC tourbag setup and pop it on, the small bag has a water proof liner so you can put in ice and some bottled water and a few brewskis for when you hit the hotel,

They will slip over your backrest and have retaining clips, you put the small one on the
larger one and have dual bags, great setup, plus when you get to the hotel you undo a couple of quick clips and haul it in the hotel, easy peasy and makes travel great been using one for 10 years, kept it when I sold the heritage and put it on the back seat
of my RG when going on solo long trips.

You'd have to check with your dealer, I think SAC and HD parted ways but
    you dealer may sell both...

This week I am ordering my luggage rack and luggage. I decided that I am going to with the SAC stuff as HRK suggested. It definitely looks like good stuff and the better deal.

That will not happen for another 60 years. Hot Rider has said that she does not want a tour pac. This is the one thing that I will listen to her about.. ;)

The tour pac equipped bikes are old mans bikes. In 60 years I will have a tour pac, then I will be an old man.

Removable tourpac is the best way to travel. When ya git home, pull it off and stick yer back rest in .
You can have both hardware on...

It only took me 30 years after your age now to become old, but I don't have a tourpac either, I use the luggage rack and either a tbag or saddleman luggage depends on how long we are going to be gone and if we take one or two bikes. The only thing I really like about the tourpac is the wrap around back rest. But then I don't ride back there anyway. I've also found a nice back pack works very well to and is easy to secure to the sissy bar/ luggage rack. JMO

My wife never wanted a Tourpack. Once I put it on my last bike she found out she really liked leaning against it. Now she is spoiled.
It really carries a lot. And with the luggage rack you can get a Tbag horse shoe bag and it really gives you much more room.
The T Bag horse shoe bag is held on with Velcro.
I've had this setup on 2 bikes. It has really served it purpose.
On the last bike I got the quick release.
Everytime I took it off and got somewhere, I needed it.
With the Ultra limited , I have never wanted to take it off.
Got to where I use it more than I ever realized.
buddy down the street has a 10 SE sg. He got him a tourpack and put on his bike.
He has the quick release. But never takes it off either.

If I pack leather jackets, chaps, rain coats and clothes for a week I just need more room
