first thing I did when I got my Shovelhead home was to buy a service and parts manual for the bike. I am slowly learning how to perform maintenance on it. Just changed pads and rotors front and rear. Found out that some shade tree endineering is necessary. The front pads attach to the caliper with hollow rivets and the local H-D shop in Lexington told me they don't work on bikes as old as mine. Found a new shop called American Legends that can get me any thing I need. If you are in Lex, Ky I recommend them. :D

Ahhh lovely Alamogordo. I was stationed there for 4 years when I was in the Air Force, and actually got to where I liked it there. Did allot of dirt bike riding in the desert. I understand it has gotten expensive to live there now

I try to do all the maintenance myself. If it gets to be something I can't do I have a couple of friends with shops. I only go to the "stealership" as an absolute last resort.

I do all maintenance myself on mt 98 fatboy and my GF's 01 sporty. Shop manuals, bike jack, and torque wrenches are key. I'm finally convincing my buds to let me help them do thier own to save $$. You'd be surprised what you can get out of the books, plus it's fun and a good way to hang out. Gratifying, and you stay intimate with your bikes as well. Also you know nothing is done half assed.

That's the truth!! I wanted to check my primary level since it hasn't been done in a while, and it was shifting hard. Turns out (to make a long story short) that the damn dealer stripped the top two derby cover bolts. So they helicoiled one and left the other stripped out. Not to mention, as stated in the service manual, the oil level is supposed to be to the bottom of the derby cover opening when upright. Well I had to add 12 ounces of oil to get the proper fluid level. :wtf: :wtf: These idiots are supposed to be "A" mechanics. Nothing but a bunch of overpaid a**holes if you ask me. :gah:

Hey Voodoo what you think the "A" stands for man.

I am currently doing my own. With the help of the Clymer manual and such great folks as I have found here. If I could ever get through buying parts for my Sick (coughing and gagging not cool wicked) Sporty, I will put pennies back for the service manual, electrical manual, and parts manual as part of my very next buys for this bike. I learned to work on cars by being poor and wanting to go places, now I am learning to work on my Harley cause it is making me poor again and I can't go no where on it :roflmao:

Yeah wvak47, I should've known what "A" stood for, I've been to that dealership before....(banging head)

I like those pipes too. A friend of mine has similar ones on her Night Train. I love my Vance and Hines Big Shots. They have an awesome sound. A little loud, but not so bad that I get stopped - other than that one time.;) People often tell me they love the sound of my bike.

Back to the subject... I do my own maintenance. It's a little difficult not having a garage or even a clean flat spot, but I've found that all the sand in the driveway that's left over from the snow storms is handy to kick over the oil and other fluids that escape onto the ground. The other part I don't like is that it always seems to start raining every time I'm working on it. Might be because if it was a nice day I'd be out riding. Hmm.

I love the pipes on my bike, they are the S/E double barrel ones with Big City Thunder baffles, loud as hell when twisted, but really deep tone to them. Anyway, if you look at the pic of my bike, that big red building is my barn that I built, 2 floors, upper is 1600 sq. ft. (my wood working shop) and the lower is about 620 sq. ft. my bike shop. So, I don't mind doing maintenance, mods, etc., on my bike. It's also heated, and has tv/stereo piped throughout. Yes, I'm lucky to have it but then again, I am a building contractor, and I am STILL paying for it! :roflmao: Thanks again for the compliments!

(hey Hot01, that's why I offered my space to you if you needed it on your way back from your trip)
