Now back to the bike: The book calls for the RPM's to be at 950-1050. I adjusted it up to about 980 on the teach but it seems that is to high. I know my EFI bike runs at 1000 and who know on my Springer I just set it to where it sounds good and runs good. Adjusting it down to 800 sounds like it lops a bit.

I'll set it at that. was kind of thinking of lowering it to around there. Hopefully the rain will let up for awhile so I can ride it today. We did have a bright moon last night. So hopefully will stay clear although very cloudy and cool now. At least the choke is working good now.

Rain finally gave up today so took the bike out. Full power on ran good but at a steady throttle it would surge a bit and the cough. Told my brother I'm going to open the carb up and see what's happening inside. Can't stand it when it don't run right. :(

Isn't surging a good sign that the rubber boot is torn???

The rubber boot was replaced last week. Instead of running carb cleaner through it I'm going to open it up, clean it, new gaskets and what ever else it needs. Might put a 38 main jet in it and a 185 needle.

The bike has sat for a long time and he said it was doing it when he started on the weekend ride when he crashed. I think opening it up and checking the diaphragm, could be bad. It will give me the opportunity to clean it internally and clean the jets. Might re-jet it to.

Tank is almost empty so will put fresh gas in. I'm kinda concerned about the diaphragm inside the carb and to see what jets are in it.

FLHT, you are correct in looking at the rubber diaphragm. I bet it's dried-out and cracked. The jet may be somewhat clogged too. It's a very small hole, and I've never been successfull finding something that will fit the hole. Just replace it....very inexpensive.

Donny Petersen did a great article for American Iron mag. a few months ago on rebuilding and fine-tuning the Keihin CV.

I bought a new diaphragm and manifold seals. The carb inside was really dirty and the small emulsion tube holes were almost all plugged up. It was already re-jetted with a main jet of 185. Picked up a #48 slow jet. Going to finish cleaning it them reinstall it.

Got the fuel inlet changed PIA. Changed out the intake manifold seals, don't think they really needed changing but if your going to do a job do it complet and right. Now to put the carb back together. Won't be able to spend any time on it tomorrow, got a funeral for me moms husband to go to.

FYI Twin cams don't like low idle, oil pressure drops
and you don't get sufficient oiling to the heads and bits.
keep it at 950 and no lower no matter how cool it sounds

Yea, I had set the RPM's at 980 before I removed the carb. Book says 950-1050 RPMs but anything above 1000 was just to high. I also installed at #48 slow jet. Main jet had been changed to a 185 so left that alone.
