I didn't know the slide would go in backwards without forcing it to place. humm..Learn something new everyday.

I did everything like you said, redid everything. Question? How far in does the carb need to go to be seated in the manifold properly. I twisted and pushed as hard as i couldtill I see a ridge on the card that is butting up against the rubber boot, is that far enougg for it not to leak?

    Thanks
    Jack

    that should be good,
A good trick is to take some liquid soap
and put it around the inside of the seal,
it will slip in and then dry up and remain sealed.

I'm having the same problem, but I don't think I ever pulled the needle jet out, so I couldn't have put it back in backwards..I did pull the slide needle and the diaphragm out and replaced them ok. I guess it could have fallen out when I pulled out the slide needle, but I looked on my workbench and didn't see anything that looks like a needle jet.

I think some of the terminology got mixed up in this thread which is confusing some people about what is backward or incorrectly installed.

The part that can be installed backward (or upside down) is the slide needle jet. This is the small chrome-looking collar that protrudes up into the carb venturi and the needle tip slides up and down inside of this. One end has a flat end with a small hole while the opposite end has a larger opening with a tapered funnel shape. The larger opening must face upward toward the needle so when the needle lifts with the slide action fuel sprays upward in a V pattern.

When installed upside down the needle in the closed position nearly seals this passage. When the needle lifts around 1/4 throttle the fuel mixture either spits out the nozzle not properly atomized or fails to come out at all causing a severe stumble.

Another common condition associated with the needle jet (nozzle, collar) is not installing it at all. This can happen when removing the emulsion tube (main jet holder) and having the needle jet fall out. Without the needle jet in place fuel sprays uncontrollably and performance becomes very erratic.

    Thanks Ken,
I haven't ever had trouble with the collar, I kind of thought they were a semi press in item. Anyway thanks for clearing that up.

I need some help please. The bike - 2001 XL1200S, 8500 miles, Screaming Eagle cams, two plug heads, K&N oval air cleaner all factory installed. H-D shorty duals removed and I have installed a Kerker (SuperTrapp) 2 into 1 exhaust system. Original jetting was a 45 pilot and a 195 main jet. I installed the CVP stage 1 kit; 45 pilot and 180 main. Mid range performance drove the installation of a 46 pilot jet. Bike is now perfect at idle, off idle response is good and the bike runs fine up to 5/8 throttle, 50+ mph and 3500 rpm in 3rd or 4th gear. From 5/8 to full throttle, the engine "motor boats" sounding as if it is on an rpm limiter, and will not accelerate; rolling off the throttle causes a major exhaust back fire. I have had main jets in it from 175 to 195 with little or no discernable performance difference. High speed plug chops show cocoa color plugs.

I have been through this entire thread and applied all information and checks. I am confident in the mechanical integrity of the carb and correct installaton of the various jets.

Any advice would be most appreciated. Thank you.
