Wow man, what a bunch of BS. Won't warranty the frame? I could see it on a dirt bike if they could prove it's been "abused", but this is just plain bad material. We see stuff come in like that all the time, especially since all the "recycled" steel has hit. I get a piece with defects like that, rust or whatever, it goes in the scrap tub, and this is just for agriculture equipment, where nobody's life is at risk. You should see the tolerances we have to meet for tractor cab frames. Guess they realize a lawsuit for a failed part would be much more costly than a new frame. You just gotta find a direct line to Milwaukee I guess, or better yet, as suggested, have a lawyer do it for ya. Happens to car company's all the time. Can't see how motorcycle manufacturers would be any different.

I didn't renew my warranty for just this sort of reason. Everytime you do almost anything, HD will try to claim it voids the warranty. Hell, change to a major brand synthetic oil and they'll try to void your warranty. I figure if within two years I have under $1100 worth of repairs, I'm ahead. I'd rather roll those dice than argue with some service manager over bullsh*t technicalities.

amen!!!! never did let the dealership take care of any warranty on mine. i did it my self and knew it was done right and in a timely manner. if my frame was like cardboards, i would have repaired it myself when i first saw it instead of screwing with the dealers/moco. even if they do allow a frame swap, i bet his down time will be 6 months or more......due to bs between the moco and dealer..............

If it was my bike, I would have cleaned and painted it myself long before now. Not a big deal to do, tape off at the tie strap lines and no one would ever know. All this frustration and stress over a little Saturday garage time, is it really worth it? Just my 2cents

Yeah, sounds like an easy solution, and on the face of it, I would agree. However, on a bike this new and with the amount of corrosion he's got goin on there, I'd be concerned.
New paint aint gonna stop the corrosion, and eventually it's gonna be a problem. I don't think thats just a bad paint (or powder) job, that's bad material. That piece of the frame was junk before it was a frame and some SOB just didn't give a damn and used it anyway.
I force steel into shapes it dont wanna be everyday for a living and see lousy material come through all the time. Send a piece to a lift manufacturer with just surface rust on it and you'll get it back everytime, and it aint because they can't grind it down and paint over it.
I wonder how excited the dealer would be to trade it back in? Suppose they would be ready to give Cardboards phone number to the prospective buyer for a reference?

I agree that he could grind it, paint it and forget it, and by the sounds of it, that might be what he has to do. Maybe I'm over thinking this. Probably won't cause him any problems unless he keeps it for a long time, but somebody's gonna have an issue down the road, and Harley is wrong for not taking care of the problem. The manufacturers we make parts for don't have the stringent requirements just to run up costs. It's because something failed at sometime and someone got hurt or worse. Harley would be way ahead with the cost of a frame as opposed to a law suit and the resulting bad press when someone down the road has a failure and has a tricky lawyer. How much did it cost McDonalds for having hot coffee?

    Just my .02

The frustration :banghead: and all the run around I to would have cleaned it and repainted it myself from the start. Just less of a head ache than dealer and HD who isen't going to do anything about it anyway.

Before you hammer the dealer, remember they are at the mercy of the factory when it comes to claims for warranty work, they have to call and get it approved.

If it's not approved they don't get paid, on the filp side if you have bought 3 bikes from the same dealer, grab the owner and nicely explain the problem and how his people as well as you are getting the run around... Doesn't seem right....

He/She might be able to go to bat through the dealer network support people.

Remember HD has laid off a buncha people too, so staff at the HQ is probably less.

I would request a meeting with the area rep, the Dealership should be able to work that out, might take a few weeks as they travel large areas now so don't blame the guy if it takes two weeks to get him/her there.

    I've been persistance but nice.

Well something is finally gonna happen !

Called the dealer today about noon, asked if he had been in contact with Harley in Wisconson. He said yes. And the painter they use has talked to them. They have some special stuff HD uses and that is what they are going to use to paint my bike.
They will dand down all the rust and put the paint epoxy stuff on the frame to make it look just like it came from the factory.
I told him about the roaring noise I had comin from the transmission, or primary. He said if it was a bearing they would cover it under warranty.

So I got the trailer out, put the Pitt Stop wheel chock in the trailer and loaded the bike up and took it and left it at the dealer.

Want to git my baby fixed and back before fall comes and I can't ride in cooler weather.
