Or modify it to an 8 speed - 2 reverse gears ha-ha. Then you could truly be unique, not boring, and have the world's fastest motorcyle in reverse!

Things to buy . Inner and outer cam bearings . Both outer must be roller cause you have gear drive .not the same set up as chain . Cam install gasket set and inner plate oring for pump not the small oring for feed side that's just a push rod tube oring no big deal cause that ring comes in the cam install set . Fresh plugs oil and filter . 98 big bore head gaskets from kirby don't forget those . Not a standard big bore gasket . The standard sits to close to the 3.938 bore. Blue and red loctite . Molding clay for mock up to check piston to valve . Cold beer and cigars for start up . And a heater

Pump to plate o-ring? I think I have a few in the bin. Out of town now but will take a look when I get back and if I have one, I will mail it to you. Or, you can pick one up at the dealer; PN-11286.

BTW, JMHO but installing a six speed in a five speed bike is a waste of money. I ride two five speed bikes, one stock and one with the Johnson Engineering Twist Gear setup and, again JMHO, but just can't see speeding $2000 plus for an extra gear that you most likely won't use that much. And, if I had a bike with a six speed, I would most likely gear it down, say run it with 24/37 primary so I could use the 6th gear more often, but that's just me. IF I was going to install a six speed in one of my five speed bikes, it would be the Baker DD6 but, again, that's just me. Good luck with your project.

I am with you here. If I were to do it I would go with the DD6. Good thread about it on Harley Tech talk. I have had some tranny work done to my bike as well but it was before I bought it so I am not 100% sure what was done.

Thanks for the part number, I will get that from a dealer, I am sure that they have that on hand, same for the outer cam bearings.

The opinions expressed are solely mine, read on at your own expense.

Me thinks you don't know what you're talking about.
Bar hopp'n sure 6 is to many, probably even 5 is to many for that. If you were to ever get out of town and on the open road you'd find out different. If you haven't tried it don't make dumb a$$ statements.

Got a buddy with a built FXR
He was riding the twisted sisters here and blew 2nd gear
Bought a Baker 6 speed and had it put in
Man he said why did I wait so long
My rpms dropped drastically and the fuel milage picked up
He said the cruising range used to be 70
Now it's easily 80 and above
He is super pleased with the baker 6 speed

Was he running the OD6 or DD6? I am more of a fan of the DD6 at this point.

No need for you to go through that trouble. I am in just the "man that would be awesome" stage at the moment. Once it gets more serious, you will be the first that I ask..

Me thinks you don't know what you are talking about. You don't know me, what I ride or how I ride, so WTF are you talking about? I never ride in town and a typical weeekend ride for me is 400 miles, minimum.

FYI, I have ridden six speed Harleys and find the sixth gear pretty much anemic and useless if fighting a long grade and/or head wind; particularly if two up and loaded. So at least I have some data on which to base my opinion. If I was a long haul tourer, my opinion might be different, but I am not. I ride mostly the Texas hill country with lots of twists and turns and changes in elevation. For the record, I will repeat the comment that you have taken issue with. IMHO (that would be MY opinion) spending $2000+ to replace a five speed with a six speed is a waste of money and not something I would do. However, if your opinion, JB's opinion or any other forum members opinion is different, I have no problem with that. You know what they say, opinions are like a$$holes (no pun intended); everybody has one.

I did not make a statement; I expressed an opinion based on personal experience. If I am not mistaken the expression of opinions based on experience so others can read and form their own opinions is what forums like this are about. Maybe that's not what this forum is about?

I've had 5 speed and 6 speeds, in my softail the 6th gear was a MAJOR difference in fuel mileage, rpm, buzzing bars etc. With the 124 it could handle the OD easy, and it was great to have 500 lower RPM at 70, I could then run at 80 easy and it was same RPM as 70 with 5 speed.

Big engines love the 6 speeds.

My 110 RG has the 6 speed as did the 106, around town never hit 6
but get on the open road and it is nice...
