Tell me..when it first happened in 2008 and I didn't have a generator and you weren't buying one at that point it was mid December and the temps were 13 degrees. I boarded up shop said f**k it and headed to North Carolina where it was 70+ degrees. Was able to buy a nice generator down there no problem(thats were I picked up that Generac) .

Came home a week or so later to survey the damage and it was burst water pipes to the tune of 32-3600$. Covered by home owners insurance. At first they weren't willing to pay to have the house thawed, you know you have to thaw the pipes before you repair them. They did in the end. I immediately bought the GEN and had a switch panel installed for future emergencies.

We have lived here sense 1993 and have only had one year and that was in December where we lost power for a week and yep 2008. We have a big wood stove in the basement and that keeps the water lines from freezing plus puts heat to the upper lever. A generator would be nice and may get one yet.

I wish I had a basement to put a wood stove in..I have just a crawl space. I do have a propane fire place insert in the living room which works w/out electricity. Its only good for heating one room as long as a curtain is placed over the entry way to the room in a power loss otherwise its a good contributing to the cause heating stable. Keeps the #2 fuel usage down.

Well, at least ya got good scenery to look at. We get power outages here from hurricanes, but haven't had one in several years. You haven't lived until a hurricane goes over you . . ..

Hope your power gets restored quick!

Power came back on 2 hours after it went off. We have another storm coming in around 3-4 this afternoon. Having heavy rains right now and high winds coming in again. This is how this country stays so green I guess. Wednesday should be able to ride again.

Put in a Generac 11KW after Sandy last year...Connected directly to the gas line...Powers everything except the AC...Power's up and power's down automatically when the power goes out and comes back on and runs for 20 minutes a week...Love it...Bring it on Mother Nature...

Second wind and rain storm is coming in now. Has not stopped raining hard sense yesterday. Some areas have broke records for total rainfall amounts. Winds are predicted to be harder than yesterday. Keeping the fingers crossed that power stays on tonight.

I just got a 6500 portable on wheels, roll it out and hook it up.

Put a dryer power outlet in the garage wired to dual 40's,
they remain off until it's time to connect, made up my wire from
the generator to the wall dryer inlet, we kill the main feed to the panel then backfeed

Yeah I know a switch is better but it works and as long as the main
is off to the street it won't back feed the main power grid...

I disconnect power to the house at the main breaker first before connecting the generator, no back feed that way, disconnected from the grid...

Since the Main power to the house is off, nothing.
When the street lights and neighbors lights are back on we
kill the generator, unplug it, then switch on the main.

You have to kill the main, that's important, when I did this
it was the year we had three huricanes hit central fl, there were
no generators to be had anywhere, no switches to be found,

Funny went to lowes for some small supplies and they rolled two
pallets of generators out, walked back, grabbed spare flashlight batteries
some tarp, and when I got back up front one pallet was empty and one half gone, so quickly grabbed one and tossed it on the Amex, if we didn't open it and returned it I could get my money back so it was good insurance.

Figures we got hit and had no power for three days, generator saved us, with propane stove and hot water heater we were the only ones with hot water
    and power on the block.

Loaned it out to my parents after we had power back and
to a friend that had power out for two weeks, he wouldn't accept it
and took it over at dusk, made him take it and powered him up,
he was afraid his neighbor would be upset, guy came over
and just asked him if he wanted some power off it, he said heck yeah
just wanted to run a light and a window fan, we ran one lead off it to his bedroom and he thanked me.
I was just glad I could help..

Just don't forget to unplug when you throw the main back on. :)

That's what s really nice in this country and that's the way many help each other in times of need. Good job.

I got a 5500 watt on wheels 3 years ago since the past few years we have lost power from snow and Nor'Easters not to mention super storm sandy. I did install a switch next to my panel. My garage is under house so I roll the generator out the garage door and plug the pigtail to it. Throw the switch start generator and I'm off and running. Just have to have gasoline. I love my generator!

Yeah I bought 4 new 5 gallon cans,
several neighbors had generators, the hard
part was getting gas because the stations didn't
have the electricity to run the pumps.

We found one and took over 20 cans in my truck
to fill it up... You go through about 10 gallons
    a day,

They need to improve the exhaust to quiet them down
    though...
