oh crap whats the inside of the case look like did we not change the oil often? should not be on the inside of the check valve side of the filter thats for sure . if the sludge is that thick on the filter side i can only imagine what the inside screen looks like on the end of the pump pick up!

I always say if I'm going to be ripped off, I'd rather be ripped off by a friend or family member than a stranger.

My patience and tolerance is usually pretty high, but when it comes to my bikes and it cutting into my riding time, 0 patience. And I do not care who it is. I would never let a close friend work on my stuff anyways. I never lose it to the point of physical abuse (anymore) or anything like that, but they will be aware of my displeasure. :D

A good friend ripped me off once and I haven't talked to him since. I guess I take that harder coming from a friend or family member, coming from a stranger, well, I guess I am on the lookout for that from strangers so if it does happen I am not so surprised.

Back to topic though. At least there was no real harm done. Glad that it was that easy. :)

:roflmao:should be real clean eh,:rolleyes:it was only a small piece of rag and looks like just about all of it is in the oil filter...
Plan right now is to take out the case plug(the one that's not supposed to come out;)) and drain the case and flush, cam plate and oil pump are coming out for inspection and cleaning and blow some air through the piston jets...put it back together and crank it over until we get oil flowing to the top end, drain oil and repeat as often as necessary until there is absolutely nothing in the oil filter...I just happened to get one of those PC Racing reusable oil filters,so at least I won't be cutting open a bunch of filters...

Does that sound like an OK plan??or how would you handle it??

Yeah I read your reply on HTT after I posted this...I'm kinda OCD like that myself....I'd rather see it with my own eyes, than wonder if it's gone...Keith said it was only a small piece of cloth about 4"x4"...I'd still like to see the jets and case...Thanks...

Yea, this is not easy stuff... keeping cool... the fact that you were smart enough to stop and know something is not right, don't keep riding probably gave you room to not get too mad with a friend. Good stuff! ;)

Started tear down last night...didn't get too far in because we didn't have the camshaft sprocket locking tool for my SE hybrid kit, going into the dealer's to order an oil pan gasket and the Cometic MLS .030 head gaskets(it's always an adventure ordering through the dealer, especially aftermarket parts:rolleyes:)
Ordered 4 S&S lifters last week, they called me Thurs, said my 2 lifters were in...Parts Canada only had 2 SNS lifters in stock...30 day wait for 2 more....

Gonna try to borrow the camshaft tool from them, prolly have to track down my buddy to borrow his...

Sure hope the flywheels pulverized the rag enough that my oil pump survived...;)

Put in gear hold foot on brake break the bolt loose .or. use a 1/4 inch impact gun on the cam bolt it will come off.

listen if the rollers are good leave them alone there is not much friction on a roller lifter and your lucky if those stock heads have 125psi seat pressure at 1.900 installed height the plunger inside the lifter was not bottomed out if it was it would not have made noise . and this myth that lifters in harley need to be changed every 30 thou is bull chit . its an chevy roller lifter they last 150.000 miles in a car . the reason these guys replace them often is they run a chit load of spring pressure and big ass lift and it was never made to run that kind of pressure in a motor that only has 6 psi at best at idle hot . check the rollers and needles if they look good run them if they dont comp cams chevy roller lifters are 16 bucks each work awesome better than the se lifters half the money . p.s. johnson makes the best lifters in the us . guess who comp buys them from . and s-s and harley -and chevy -and every one else in the industry . i think there is only one question will you change them or not :roflmao::D

Probably not....They were new stock lifters I put in with the cam change last year, only 10-12,000 miles on them....I was just thinking about if some of the rag chit got in them it wouldn't come out(that OCD thing again;))
I didn't find any pieces of rag when we drained the oil or when the cam cover came off, just extremely fine pieces of thread would settle to the bottom of the jug the oil was drained into,so that got me thinking about little pieces of thread getting into the lifter and plugging it up,but I think I may be just getting a little paranoid....I agree with you about guys changing lifters too often even with high lift cams and hi spring pressures, they will wear out quicker in those situations, but then I think they would bleed down quicker and pump up slower giving a clatter noise before they failed, then when they get noisy, change them.
I would only change lifters on this bike again when/if I did another cam change or they got noisy....

Well if there is rag in the oil pump area I would say yes and also blow out the push rods and see if they have crap in there ?
