Any half decent auto parts supply store or Snap On tool truck should have a mechanic's stethoscope, likely $15.00 or so.
Also helps to listen to a proper running engine nearby for comparison to yours, as some noises are normal, but amplified by the stethoscope.

Amazon,NAPA, Harbor Freight,Autozone....just about anywhere you can buy car parts and tools....http://www.harborfreight.com/mechanics-stethoscope-69913.html
You can use piece of a broom handle, a long screwdriver(put handle to your ear,the other way hurts like hell LOL)anything that will transmit sound through it...

yep get one from AutoPepboyZone $20 or less
even Harbor Freight if you have one near you however
they are made in China, might not work on a USA engine :D

Wouldn't sweat the embarrassment, hell if I did that every
time my 124 broke something I'd still be sheepish...

Listen on both sides and see what's making noise,
might save you some time and grief.

Better yet take it to your wrench buddy and let him
listen, $50 for half hour of "yeah I know what that is"
is cheaper than fugging it up yourself.

Yep, decided that I am not going to bother with looking into this problem for awhile. There are other things that I have neglected that really needs to get done. Winter stuff to do in the garage, I am bummed about this one.

Yeah, that sucks big time. A mechanic's stethoscope is a cool tool to have around - get one at any auto parts store.

Yeah I am sure they work but it's going to sit broken until winter.

Its in the 100* mark here and riding is no where over., were waiting for it to cool off some.
Fall is some of the best riding ever here, when it drops down out of the high 90's in Sep -Oct.-Nov.
Then it cools down for leather and real good riding starts.

Think about it, do you want the fastest bike on the block or do you want to ride.

Hate to say it, but cardboard may have a point, might be acceptable idea to lick your wounds and trade up to a new or recent year model with yours as trade in. Be back out riding by next week possibly. Just a thought.

Won't do it. Putting the cart before the horse. Need to find what is wrong first.

Don't need to bother stressing about it if it becomes a dealer's problem as a trade...

Not really stressing, just need to walk away from the situation for a bit. Other things need doing so I will focus on that. I fully intend on fixing it, now if that is via a brand spanking new engine or fixing this one. I will find out soon.

Hey Paul, if the inner primary bearing went, wouldn't I have Drivability issues with shifting and stuff like that?

Not unless it locked down and you'd probably have drag
making it harder to accelerate a bunch of oil as it would take
out the seal, maybe, and noise from the bearing.

I couldn't stand putting the bike away and not riding during the riding season. I'd dump it and walk away riding a newer bike. But that's me.

Summer is too short in Minn. to $#@^ around with a situation like this. Also life is too short in general. Get out and have some fun on something, anyway. Do you still have that old Suzuki kicking around? Throw some insurance on it and hit the road.
I've had to downgrade my riding hopes this summer due to family issues, conversely this meant more time 4 wheeling on the old Yammy with my daughter. Sporty still gets ridden once in awhile, just not putting on the miles I'd been hoping to do this year.

Nope they make noise way beforehand. The race walks in on the main shaft also and then takes out the driven gear seal also .look on the floor left hand side of the bike below the inner primary do you see a couple of drops of oil if so inner primary race and seal and bearing need to be fixed

Ok. Would that leak be constant or intermittent?
