Well guys, it is official. My season is done. Took the bike for inner primary work to a nearby dealer. Told them to fix that and explained this is step 1 of diagnosis telling them What was going on. I left and about 10 miles away the called me and said that the noise is no way the inner primary. I said fix that anyway l as it needs to be done anyway. Now it is a matter of getting into the cam chest and start snooping.

It does suck. But my gut tells me that it is new engine time. 75,000 on this one so I am not super super pissed, however if I find what I think I am going find, JohnnyBiker is going to go Knock Knock on somebody.

    That is bad news JB

I can relate to that...beginning to think both my bikes were fcked up on purpose, Flo keeps telling me violence is not the answer...I asked her if she knew what the question was??She said "No,but I know where I'll have to go to see you if it is your answer, and good luck getting any riding in when you're in a 10' x 10'.
    I hate it when she's right:banghead

Give Cali Phil a call and have one of these dropped off at your door and be back on the road in 3 weeks:D

Well. I had the conversation with the builder. He requested an email with build parameters so he could put together a quote. About a week after I sent that email I called because I didn't hear from him. When I spoke to him he said was very busy and just hasn't gotten to it as if then. Haven't heard a thing since then.

That r are so many different things that are just weird this summer. I don't think it's intentional, just people who can't do the job as they say. Of course I am speculating that this is the case as I still have to get into the cam chest and have a look.

Well I can tell you this much for a garage built 98 that was a built in a week end out of a garage with hand tool and a Dremel. That motor made some kick ass power with peanut cams . It was freaking wisper quiet even with gear drives in it . I don't give a rats ass what he says to you he fu--- up .it went in quiet after a 1000 mile trip for valve seals now it left with noise .sorry I'm just a little pissed I froze my ass off in that tundra of a state.I KNOW IT'S NOT MY BIKE .but I did have a dog in that fight.

I am pissed as well. This put a huge wrench in a lot of plans. Well, perseverance will pay off but man, I would much rather have had this happen on my own terms. I agree, this makes two engines now. Grrr

I"m thinking y'all built that thing in sub zero temps, maybe
all the bits shrunk up and as it warmed up changed size :p

Sorry to hear about it JB, but that's the way my Heritage
ended up, ride, wrench, ride, wrench....

I know about sub zero shrinkage. Maine ocean temps choked me up. Something in my throat.

This one is more difficult to swallow because it went in for valve seals and then this. I haven't touched that engine since Paul and I built it. Coincidence? Not on your life.

Well since you won't say what happened or that you suspect happened it's hard to say.

What I suspect that happened is something in the Valvetrain took a dive. I am thinking a collapsed lifter, bent push rod and so forth. (check the area that was last touched).

OK that's not so bad, but how would that be a problem of the builder,
if the lifter gave out it's just a defective part, if the push rod is bent then
that could be the result of over revving the engine push rods just don't
bend and if it was setup wrong from the beginning then it would have
    bent long ago.

Hopefully it's nothing seriously bad like a busted rod or bad bearing
on the rods, these engines are pretty dang stout and can handle a lot
    of stuff.

Open her up and have a look.

My thoughts are that when the rocker assembly was removed it was not reassembled correct. Either a pushrod got bent or a pushrod was put in the wrong position .or they did not wait for the lifter to bleed down and he cracked a rocker support and then it let go.or there was oil in a bind hole as he retorqued something and it cracked .something don't jive.like I said before it made great power and was spun on the dyno many times .it was fine till it was .f....d with period.

Yes, if it's a collapsed lifter it is possible that it was just plain failure however if there is also a bent push rod, sorry, that is error by humans. Paul set those push rods perfectly. I was there and watched. 20k later then they fail? COME ON? My build wasn't radical in any way. Its real funny how my bike goes on with zero abnormal noises and it comes out of the shop and less than 300 miles I have this. Sorry man, but I am not buying that the engine was put together wrong.
