I'll try it this weekend. I can deal with some white smoke puffs out the pipes but I cant deal with oil dripping out the exhaust ports onto my new chrome pipes ! aahhhhh! $300 for STD pipes and they getting oil stained! WTF?

i was going to ask...high detergent oil ? what is the best break in oil.
bmw (car) recommends wot in 3rd gear to 60 mph, let off to 30mph...
repeat 5 or 6 times to seat new rings. really wanted to know what
hd recommends. i hear rings will not seat with synth oil.
    school me...

I'm sure it depends upon the HD motor type. Mine is a shovelhead. Supposed to be take it easy for 50 miles, don't over rev or lug the motor b/c air cooled engines get hotter quicker than water cooled (car) engines. After first 50 miles ride bike as normal. I'm at about 60 miles and getting some smoke and oil leaking. I will try more miles to seat rings but I think something is not right. The ring gaps were slightly larger than should have been.

i am a shovel too. i have been lucky so far...
push ring into cylinder with piston and dead on gaps, no xtra work.
will see how well this shovel does after honing.

poosh ring into cylinder with the piston so it is square...measure gap
1 at a time. how else can you check ring gap ?
just saying i have been fortunate, i have not had to file any rings to size, yet.

2nd ring isnt in upside down is it? dot should face up,bevel down.with the teflon V. seals, did you check top collar to seal clearance?if your running any cam at all,its a good chance you smashed the seal.when we install teflon seals on shovels, the guides have to be machined down a fare amount

I would think for sure that with pc telflon seals they had to machine the guides!? that would suck ass to do a tear down over not cutting the guides down . I think these heads were all done up for him also !!! He has cam in it tommy likes to haul ass. lol

the OD has to be machined, but alot of guys dont realise that the guides also have to machined shorter too, alot shorter,to get the clearance collar to seal,on shovels
