I agree with you on the RG dash--ugly. The RG and SG are virtually IDENTICAL bikes except for fairing.

I ride my SG about 30,000 miles a year and never felt any front-end vibration even at speeds above 90. But it has Dyna Beads in tires for balancing--big improvement. It just turned over 96,000 totally problem-free miles. Haven't spent one nickel for repairs. Can't beat that with a stick!

Wish H-D would re-design the dash on RG. Then, maybe I'd give it a second look as I DO like the twin headlights.

I had a street Glide before my Road Glide. Thinking of going back. The Rg just doesn't handle as good. I rode to Vegas this last weekend and got stuck in 60mph winds and the bike seemed to float and was all over the road. Crazy scarey. I heard from some others the fairing in the RG lifts the front end off the ground in strong side winds, never had that prolem with my SG.

I can understand that. I had similar problems like that with a Goldwing I used to own.

I had the RG fever. I have a few buddy's with Road Glides.
Hit about 5 Demo days a year for 2 yrs.
I rode every road glide on the market including the SE model
I notised that when the wind is blowin and you come out of a 90* turn and git on it, its like a john boat going back and forth.

After riding road glides all day I got off and got on a SE SG

I knew right then that the Road Glide fever was over.

    Wound up gittin my limited.

That article in the last HOG magazine was very flawed. I was surprised to see some of the statements made by Matt and Kris, people who should know better than to make such blunders. If you could see the tests done in a wind tunnel, you'd know instantly that the RG has some drawbacks compared to the SG or any FLH.

First: the general shape of the RG causes front-end lift at speed (not good). Second: with the much larger flat sides of the RG, side winds cause more unsettling movement to the bike. Third: because the RG fairing is further away from the rider, the rider loses most of the weather protection.

You can't argue with tests done in a wind tunnel and I suspect Matte and Kris are merely expressing their personal tastes instead of using factual data. As for Kris "owning" 8 RG's: he's given a free one every year, so you can read between the lines there. Matt is just repeating things he's been told by Kris without evaluating them.

Lastly, I don't know what criteria they used when they stated RG riders put on 20% more miles than SG riders. I ride 30,000+ each year on my SG, and most of the real long-haul riders are on FLHT's by a big margin.

If you never had any wind to contend with, the RG is great. But where can you go and not get wind blasted? Geez! This year it seams like the wind never stops howling.
